Cinderella’s Golden Carrousel

Cinderella’s Golden Carrousel was built in 1917 by the Philadelphia Toboggan Co. and was eventually located in Olympic Park in Maplewood, New Jersey. It is here where Disney Imagineers discovered the neglected ride and brought it to Florida.

Cinderella’s Golden Carrousel

Disney painstakingly renovated the carousel, the 60-foot wide platter, and the original hand-carved wooden horses. Although only 72 of the horses from the original carousel were salvageable, there are currently 90 wooden steeds on this two-minute musical attraction. Each of the horses is completely different, although they each receive the same, meticulous hand-painting, which takes about 48 hours per horse. Disney also added 18 hand-painted scenes recounting the story of Cinderella on the wooden canopy above the horses. Also, in a carousel befitting a princess, Disney added decorative 23-karat gold leaf to all of the horses, as well as real silver and bronze.

The gentle charm of this attraction is enhanced by the nostalgic rhythms of classic Disney music such as; A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes, A Whole New World, Be Our Guest, Chim Chim Cheree, Colors of the Wind, Heigh Ho, Someday My Prince Will Come, So This Is Love, and When You Wish Upon a Star.

The 87 horses on Cinderella’s Golden Carrousel are arranged in 5 rows. Smaller, “child-friendly” horses are in the interior rows, and they increase in size on the outer rows. Did you know that no two horses on the attraction are exactly alike?
