From the official Disney Parks Blog: The original Disneyland park attraction, the Haunted Mansion, that debuted in August of 1969 has now inspired a new film for The Walt Disney Studios by well-known filmmaker Guillermo del Toro. A new piece of artwork was also unveiled by the Studios and is featured below.

Announced at Comic-Con today, del Toro surprised thousands of fans with the news. In speaking about the new project, del Toro said, “I couldn’t be more excited to be a part of my own adaptation of the original theme park attraction Walt envisioned and that remains- for me- the most desirable piece of real estate in the whole world!”
Rich Ross, Chairman of The Walt Disney Studios, remarked “Millions of people from around the world visit The Haunted Mansion each year, but no one has ever had a tour guide like Guillermo del Toro. Guillermo is one of the most gifted and innovative filmmakers working today and he is going to take audiences on a visually-thrilling journey like they’ve never experienced before.”
So tell us – what do you think of this announcement? What should the storyline be? What characters from the mansions in the parks should be included? Share YOUR ideas!

Del Torro is a great director and will be all over this subject. I smell a classic in the making.
This sounds great! Perfect choice for a director. Sounds like Del Torro gets it. Can’t wait to see more details.
Awesome!!!!
I wonder how it will start. Like…will it start with the bride killing her husbands? Or will it start with all of that in the past and now the house is haunted? I would love for all of the people in the paintings in the stretching room to be explained too! So much potential!!!
I am so incredibly excited about this news. Del Toro has such an amazing ability to blur the lines between the natural & unnatural. I cannot wait to see what he does. I very much hope that he reviews Claude Coats’s original concepts and integrates some of them. How about gettin’ Mr. Korkis back on the show for an episode all about the Mansion’s origins, the design disagreements, and the things they couldn’t do because of capacity demands…things that maybe will inspire Mr. del Toro?
Heard it was gonna be on the scarrier side of things… should be great!
Brillant news. The last Haunted Mansion didn’t exactly live up to the rides potential but hopefully Del Toro, who is a filmmaking genius, can do a lot better this time.
my favorite quote from del toro was “we arent accepting Eddie Murphys calls” LOL
WOW! I cannot wait to see this.
I’s definitely going to be dark. I really hope people don’t complain that it’s going to be “too scary”
I am so excited about this and hope that they have some things to show us around Christmas as it would be a great gift. If not then I can only hope for things at D23 in 2011.
Well, I’m excited. Except the fact that it will be in 3D…so over that. Anyway, I would hope it takes us through the story of the bride, and obviously the hitchhiking ghosts will be involved, since it looks like it is being based on hatbox ghost. I like the concept art so far. Should be interesting.
It’s very exciting, but I’m also bit apprehensive of an adaptation of a classic Disney attraction. I was not very pleased with the 2003 film. This could either be outstanding or it could make some Haunted Mansion fans upset & annoyed – no “in between”. I really hope it IS outstanding, and I wish del Toro and The Walt Disney Studios the best!
Please say it’s not a comedy!
It has the potential to be a really great film. They reallyyyyyy messed up with the first movie.
I am very excited about this news. This has the potential of being an AWESOME movie!Hurry baaaaack, Hurry baaaaack
With del Torro, it will be a visual feast. I hope it’s more dramatic this time around.
@ Julie he said it wont be a comedy. “its gonna be scary and fun. and if you take your kids they will scream” – del toro
I am excited! I hope it is better then the Haunted Mansion movie that had Eddie in it.
I must be on the oppisite side. I hope they do make it more then a pg movie. Alot of kids will want to see the movie being named after a Disney attraction. The formore movie with Murry was a great verson. It would be nice if the movie was made to show the bride going throu all her grooms with out smashing our faces into the gore. This should follow Mr. Disney idea that the movies and attraction should be made for the whole family to see. If these concepts are not going to be followed then the title should not reflect a Disney attraction name or should be released to movie house in the major cities.
This is only my openion. When I read the this movie was going to be made I was hoping the story would either perceed the Murrphy movie or contuie the story.
I liked the Eddie Murphy film…childish and creepy!!! This new version will be even better!
okay. I am personally very excited about this, because del toro seems to be taking it in the right direction. I agree that kids are going to want to see this since it is named after a disney attraction. But the kids got their “funny” PG movie already. It’s time for a serious, creepy, scary version. CAN’T WAIT!
Like a previous poster said, I hope it’s not too violent. You can’t screw it up anymore than the Eddie Murphy version, so del Torro has that going for him.
Four letters that could make this great…B P R D! This could be a chance for Disney & Dark Horse to partner & parent a beautiful, dark creation. After all, the Disney & Marvel merging in “Iron Man 2″ created some brilliant yet subtle crossovers of the two worlds that every fanboy should recognize & appreciate!
This will be amazing!!! I really hope Constance, the singing busts, and of course Little Leota are in it! I am so excited!!!
TOTALLY GEEKED TO SEE THIS!!!!!
this is going to be great! this will be my first Del Torro movie and my first Haunted Mansion film (not really, i saw Murphy’s version when i was 11 and my mother was so angry she took out the movie, saying it was “Evil and sick” and took it back to Blockbuster. ah, memories) . i wasn’t impressed by Eddie Murphy, and i do hope it can be a classic to us all and a classic to kids too. Lou, i can see why this is your favorite ride. it has so much history and laughter.
I hope that this is way beter than the last Haunted Mansion Movie but personaley I think that that is the reason they are remakeing it I mean the origanal movie cant be the story they stick with the game had a better storyline
