Listen to the Show

Hello and welcome to The WDW Radio Show – Your Walt Disney World Information Station. I am your host, Lou Mongello, and this is show #241 for the week of September 25, 2011.

Walt Disney World will celebrate it’s 40th Anniversary next week, and to honor the occasion, I’ll continue with our look at its opening day attractions. This week, we’ll look at not one, but two that welcomed guests on opening day in 1971. Both were simple pleasures that afforded guests unique views of the parks. And they also share the fact that neither is in operation today. Join me as we explore and examine the Skyway and Davy Crockett Explorer Canoes.

I’ll have more information about our 40-Hour live broadcast and charity auction celebrating Walt Disney World’s 40th Anniversary on October 1, before playing more of your voicemails at the end of the show. So sit back, relax, and enjoy this week’s episode of the WDW Radio Show

Thanks for listening! Be sure to tune in next week!

I resurrected some old school VHS tape of our family vacation in February 1985. It was already starting to break down. Some footage of the Skyway from Fantasyland to Tomorrowland. I was 10 and had the double death grip on the bars of the bucket. Watching it just now, I even caught myself asking “Is this thing safe?” It was probably my six or so trip to WDW but I think this was the first time we rode it because my little sister was older (the one in the pigtails). Also you can see an old school Mickey shaped ice cream bars.

I didn’t get to WDW until 1988, but went to Disneyland in 1973 and vaguely remember going on both attractions. I also remember that the Frontierland store had a lot of cool stuff for kids back then, like the coon skin hats, rifles, water jugs, etc., which made it seem like a real store from the old frontier! At least to an 8 year old boy, that is. And the Shootin’ Arcade was awesome! That day at Disneyland was one of the most amazing experiences in my life! Thanks again for another fabulous show, Lou and Ryan!!!

Miss the skyway in the parks. Canoes were always a great way to get wet.
