Listen to the Show

Hello and welcome to The WDW Radio Show – Your Walt Disney World Information Station. I am your host, Lou Mongello, and this is show #250 for the week of November 27, 2011.

In the past 40 years, we’ve seen some pretty interesting things at Walt Disney World: A waterskiing Goofy, gunfighters shooting it out in Frontierland, singing fruit, a rapping Mickey and much more. But until recently, many people couldn’t recall seeing a character walking around in Adventureland with a giant orange head, leaves for arms and a green stem sticking out of his head. Today, of course, we fondly recall (and miss) the Little Orange Bird, and in this week’s show, Jim Korkis and I will take a look back in time at the Sunshine Tree Terrace and it’s one-time host (and hostess). We’ll explore the origins of the Orange Bird, the Sherman Brothers song, why he and Anita Bryant may have flown the coop, and the recent resurgence of our little orange friend. I’ll then pose a question for you to share your thoughts on as well.

It’s also been way too long since our last contest, so this week, so listen carefully for your chance to win a Disney prize package in my “Where in the World Have You Heard This?” Contest.

I’ll have a few announcements, including the date and location of the next Meet of the Month in Walt Disney World, and then play more of your voicemails at the end of the show. So sit back, relax, and enjoy this week’s episode of the WDW Radio Show.

Thanks for listening! Be sure to tune in next week!

  1. Mark D. says:

I remember the plastic orange juice drink cups. We drank out of them all week on our trip that year and when we got home we used them for months. I also remember the flight attendant filling them up with orange juice on the flight home. But alas, I cannot say what ever happened to them. I wish I still it one!

  2. MileHighDisney says:

I remember the little drink cups as well. I used to save them for a while but sadly Lou I have none left.

  3. Tony says:

When you told Jim that you two should take a research trip to Tokyo Disney and make it a buddy movie, the song Movin Right Along came in my head.

  4. Jen says:

There also was a grape version of this cup. I was always torn between which one I should get. That was my favorite treat at WDW! I wish they were still there so I could share one with my kids… who am I kidding, I wouldn’t share.

  5. Teri says:

I’m afraid the legacy of the Orange Bird will always be tainted for me because of Anita Bryant… and it breaks my heart.

  6. Greg says:

While Anita does taint the Orange Bird, I prefer to think orange thoughts and not abandon our little friend. Bring him & his home back!

  7. Chuck Zitta says:

I remember the Bucky Beaver commercial thanks to the movie Grease! Great tidbit by Jim. Did anyone ever make Lou a costume? That would be a riot! Unfortunately, I never had the opportunity to experience the Orange Bird. Would absolutely enjoy it, if WDW decided to bring the little fella back. Great character. I completely agree, the Anita Bryant stigma would no longer be attached to the Orange Bird if they brought him back today. Kids would love him! Adults too, of course.

The carved buffalo factoid was a fabulous touch! Have to remember that, our next time down.

Thanks again, for another fantastic show, Lou and Jim!!!
