Disney has a lot of great songs composed by a variety of different artists. Many tell stories, some are just silly. Some are sad and slow, some are happy and fast. Here I have a list of songs (in no particular order) that are my favorites, featuring everything from movies to rides.
1. I’ll Make a Man Out of You
This song is upbeat and tells the story of Captain Li Shang toughing up some weak trainees (and Mulan, disguised as a man) to defeat the Huns. This song makes you think about the struggle of boys who have to grow up too fast and go to war. Heed my every order and you might survive.
2. I Won’t Say I’m in Love
Megara loves Hercules, but won’t admit to it. This song is a fight between the Megara and The Muses over Meg’s love for the hero. This story-to-a-beat is one of my favorites because she sounds exactly like a teenage girl with a huge crush. I think the singer, Susan Egan, is perfect for the part. Get off my case, I won’t say it!
3. Disney Mambo No.5
From: Radio Disney Ultimate Jams
I gotta admit-this song is a little kiddie. I know all the words from 7 years ago when my cousins and I sung it all the time. I love this song because it makes you smile when you sing about all the characters and you can’t help to dance when you hear it. This is and probably always will be on of my top 5 favorite Disney songs. A little bit of Minnie in my life. A little bit of Mickey by her side.
4. Grim Grinning Ghosts
From: Haunted Mansion
This is the song played throughout the Haunted Mansion. Its creepy feel and creepy vocalists to match (one is Thurl Ravenscroft, the voice of Tony the Tiger) make it the perfect theme song for the hitchhiking ghosts and the other 996 happy haunts. When you listen to this song you can picture riding through the Haunted Mansion with a ghost by your side. Plus, this is one of those Disney songs that you can’t get out of your head. Weird glows gleam where spirits dwell, restless bones etherealize, rise as spooks of every size. Grim, grinning ghosts come out to socialize.
5. I Just Can’t Wait To Be King
From: The Lion King
Featured in the Lion King, this song is a classic for me. It is upbeat and fun to listen to. The song tells the story of Simba, who just can’t wait until he is all grown up and becomes the next King of the Pride Lands. We all think that it will be more fun when we grow up – so then why do our parents look so miserable sometimes? Maybe Peter Pan did have the right idea!! Free to run around all day, Free to do it all my way.
6. Welcome (Phil Collins version)
From: Brother Bear
I LOVE Phil Collins with all of my heart! Ever since I was little, I remember listening to his songs, whether Disney or not. Welcome is the perfect song to describe family. This song plays in Brother Bear when Koda and Keni are at the river filled with salmon. It is true that there is nothing better than the time we spend with our families and friends – either in person or in the box (shout out to my box family!) We’re all here for each other. Happy to give.
7. Strangers like Me
Another Phil Collins song so this might have made my list just for that reason but this is a great song even if it wasn’t Phil singing. Phil points out that we are all similar even though we may be very different. It’s kind of like a lesson in school put to music. Strangers Like Me shares the story of Tarzan’s fascination for Mr. Porter, Jane, and Clayton. Something’s familiar about these strangers like me.
This song is inspirational, and I just love the beat. It explains a great message about finding your inner self. Who is that girl I see, staring straight back at me?
9. Life’s a Happy Song
From: The Muppets
This song has been stuck in my head since I saw the Muppets movie during opening weekend. Not only do I get a silly grin on my face every time I sing it but it makes other people smile too. (Although it’s true that this may just be because of my singing, I prefer to think that it is just a happy song!) This tune can describe many things, like chatting to my box family right before a live newscast by Lou, or you and your best friend meeting your Idol. Amy Adams is just brilliant, and I love the message that it sends. Life’s a happy song, when there’s somebody to sing along.
10. Little Town (Belle)
From: Beauty and the Beast
This is the opening song for the movie Beauty and the Beast. I love this because they talk about her being peculiar and different, but she is just like us. I also adore how Gaston is introduced, and she just ignores him along with the rest of her surroundings when engrossed in a book. She and I have a lot in common when it comes to books! (I made the conclusion while listening to this song for the millionth time that she is reading Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. I mean, look at the picture on the left page when they show the inside of her book!) Look there she goes….a girl who’s strange but special, a most peculiar mademoiselle.
These are my favorites but, like with ice cream flavors, everyone has different taste. What are your favorite Disney songs? Thank you for reading my collection of songs, and I hope you add a few to your play lists if they aren’t already on there. Congratulations to Daley C. for getting the Where in the World am I? picture correct. It was the top of the Haunted Mansion in Magic Kingdom.
See ya REAL soon!
