Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom: An Overview and Review

by Jonah H.

Sup blogers, Jonah H. here, to bring you what’s new with the Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom. First, a shout-out to Jessica and Jimmy for answering my last question. It was a little difficult to pick, because both answers are right in their own way. I was looking for Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs the first feature-length movie, which Jessica L. answered. I also like Jimmy W.’s answer of Tommy Tucker’s Tooth, Walt’s very first short film.

I’m back from my summer vacation, and I went to Walt Disney World! Got spare time and not sure what do to with it? Then check out the Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom. I will tell you both the experience that you’ll have and the experience that I had (due to many possibilities of your quest, my advice may be incorrect sometimes).

First, with the experience you will have. When you arrive at the Magic Kingdom on Main Street USA, you’ll see a fire house and a big sign “Join the Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom.” When you walk in (hopefully there won’t be a line), you will see a “portal” with the main introduction of how Hades sent his minions – Pain and Panic – to steal Merlin’s crystal of the Magic Kingdom. But after obviously failing, they accidentally destroyed the crystal and it is then scattered throughout the park. Merlin explains all this to you and wishes you good luck on your quest. Next, the Cast Member will bring you up to speed if you didn’t understand the intro. You are then given five spell cards, a key card and a map. Then you are taken to the spell training portal, and Merlin then teaches you how to cast a spell (regardless of your card). After you understand that, you begin your quest to find the parts of Merlin’s crystal scattered throughout the park.

Five areas of the Magic Kingdom have portals (sadly, Tomorrowland doesn’t). When you are done with the spell training, Merlin gives you a symbol and tells you which area of the park it’s in. He includes a picture of where the portal is located. Once you find the correct portal, you receive help from a guide , depending on which area you are in. For Adventureland, the genie helps you. For Frontierland, it’s Pocahontas, and so on. If you are at the incorrect portal your guide will advise you where to go instead.

The portals are really awesome the way they blend into the buildings. If no one is playing, you would never know it’s a portal. They are meant to look like building windows, for example. At the first window you go to, you will have to take out your Sorcerers key and hold it up to a lock. This creates your first portal which shall be an introduction. Merlin will be under attack and outnumbered. His portal will start to break up and you then lose his connection. Your guide takes over and tell you to go your next location in the same area (such as Adventureland). At the next portal, you shall meet the villain that you face in your area, then you mildly wound him/her/it. You then go to your final portal of the area. Once you are at the last portal, you then go face-to-face to defeat the villain and recover one of the eight pieces of The Crystal. After that, you are then thanked by Merlin and your guide and then given a choice: either continue your quest or end it here. If you choose to end it and then change your mind, you can easily go to where Merlins advises you to go next (for example, if you finished one portal but you wanted to go on a ride, you can continue your quest whenever you please). This continues until you retrieve all the pieces of The Crystal. Something happens when you retrieve all the pieces, but I do not know what that is, because sadly I wasn’t able to finish my adventure.

Now for my experience. When I was first given my five cards, my favorite was Eve’s laser blast. This card is a machine spell with a power of 5, an energy boost of 1 and an energy shield of zero. The card’s rhyme is “if the darkness you must face, bring laser beams from outer space.” The other four cards are the Blue Fairies Wand Wish, Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride, Caballero Donald’s Piñata and Cinderella’s Magic Ribbon. After I was given my five cards, I knew the only one I would use was Eve’s laser blast, because in the movie Wall-E, Eve’s laser blast put a hole in a navy ship and caused it to fall, which made a chain reaction for the other ships to fall like dominos. It’s a powerful laser! I started in Adventureland. My villain was Jafar and he conjured a giant snake to eliminate me. After I chuckled at Jafar’s puny attempt to destroy me, I held up my Eve’s laser blast card and it scanned the snake and Eve said “target acquired,” one laser blast   later I said “target destroyed.” In the next portal I went head-to-head with the ugliest villain in Disney history, Jafar! (ever heard of mouth wash?!?! I mean REALLY!?!?). After two of Eve’s laser blasts, Jafar fell like broccoli. After defeating Jafar, the genie and Merlin thanked me for all my help. I wanted to help some more, so I continued playing in Frontierland.

Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom is really fun, and I can’t wait to play it again!

Here’s my trivia question for you all: what is the name of the Sorcerer in Fantasia, from the Sorcerer’s Apprentice scene?

Jonah lives in Virginia, and considers himself the biggest Disney “maniac” in his family.  He has been going to Walt Disney World since he was 8 months old, and he still loves it to this day.  He is 11 years old and in 5th grade.
