They were empty. I asked a cast member I know about what happened to the pigeons. He explained to me the birds were released every day at Noon and they would circle the castle several times and go back the cages.

Unfortunately, the local hawks would show up at the same time for lunch with the pigeons. The hawks were not discrete to the horror of small ones and parents. It sounded like a good deal on paper though!:). It reminds me of one of my favorite TV quotes.

As Mr Carlson said, as God is my witness I thought Turkeys could fly!
