Hello and welcome to The WDW Radio Show – Your Walt Disney World Information Station. I am your host, Lou Mongello, and this is show #312 for the week of February 10, 2013.

I’m here to help you have the best possible Disney vacation experience, and bring you some Disney magic to to wherever you by talking about the things that make us happy about Walt Disney World on this podcast, as well as my videos, blog, live broadcasts, events, trivia books, CDs and more. You can find it all at WDWRadio.com.

This week we’re going to take a closer look at an attraction that, believe it or not, has ties to Walt Disney. The Kilimanjaro Safaris in Disney’s Animal Kingdom is an attraction replete with story, details, and important messages. In this week’s DSI: Disney Scene Investigation, we’ll look at it’s very early beginnings, development, changes, and secrets.

I’ll have the answer to our last Walt Disney World Trivia Question of the Week, and pose a new challenge for your chance to win a Disney prize package.

I’ll also recap the WDW Radio Event announcements made during our 6 Year Anniversary Celebration this weekend before playing some of your voicemails at the end of the show so sit back, relax, and enjoy this week’s episode of the WDW Radio Show

20,000 Leagues under the Sea is one of my most vivid memories of the parks. The 1st time I remember going was when I was 4 and I was overly excited that they had REAL Mermaids and that I got to see them in person. My family used to go every February and I remember at age 8 looking at my porthole wondering why they had replace the real mermaids and octopus (or squid as it is actually) with animatronics, or dolls. I will remember that feeling forever, realizing I was growing up and the real world was not “real mermaids”. This is why it has been so important to me to make sure my kids both experience all of Disney magic while it is all still “Real”.

I just listened to this podcast today and I loved how you and Ryan called yourself “Nerds” for your favorite part of Kilimanjaro Safaris as being the music. You can include me in that “Nerd” group as well! My favorite part of that attraction is the music as well! My second favorite part of Kilimanjaro Safaris is the Elephant portion. The last time I was at WDW was in March 2012 and the day my fiance and I went to Animal Kingdom (he proposed later that night at Magic Kingdom!) it was pouring rain all day long! We went on the Safaris as soon as we got to the park and since it was raining, not many people were in the park and waiting in line for that ride, so we got an entire safari truck to ourselves! When we got to the Elephant portion, one of the new baby Elephants was playing around in their “watering-hole” and having the time of his life. Since the safari truck behind us was a ways back, we got to spend some extra time watching the Elephants and I have the cutest video of the baby playing in the water and the rain. It makes for a priceless memory. I bet people who spend all that money to go see Elephants in Africa don’t get to see what I saw!! I love your podcasts and look forward to your latest one every week! Keep up the amazing work for all of us “Disney Nerds”! :)

  3. This and the Wild Africa Trek shows have really been 2 of my favorites!

I got shivers up my spin when Brian told the story of Joe Rohde bringing the lion into the board meeting. Great stuff.

I also LOVE the portion of the attraction when the African music comes on. Definitely one of the those feel good Walt Disney World moments every time.

  5. Ellise says:

The part of the attraction when the music comes on is always my favourite part too! It gives me shivers and just makes it feel so relaxing and authentic. I wanted to share my most recent experience on this ride, though. I went in May 2013 with my boyfriend. It was his first time going to disney and he loved Animal Kingdom. His family is from South Africa and his grandparents live very close to the Kruger reserve park. He was brought to tears on this ride because of how much it reminded him of going on safari as a child with his grandparents and seeing some of his favourite animals, especially the springboks. On our safari, we got stuck for about five minutes because one of the white rhinos was on the vehicle path. It was close enough to touch (although we didn’t).
