shopDisney: What to Put in Every Easter Basket

by Alyssa Wiseman

shopDisney is a bi-weekly blog that will focus on Disney merchandise and products sold in the parks, in Disney stores, and in other retail markets.  We will explore product reviews, affordability, and to whom the products are marketed.  Like any other good product review, we will conclude with a rating scale for several different key components: price, age group, and whether the product is a “must have.”

Though the weather may not seem Spring-like (here in Indiana we are still getting snow), Easter is only 2 weeks away and that means many different things: time spent celebrating with family, flowers blooming (maybe), candy, and Easter baskets!

I recently visited several non-Disney stores to search for Disney branded products for your Easter basket and wanted to share my discoveries with you.

Target:

This store appears to carry a large array of Disney products at any time of the year and Easter is no exception.  Of course, any Easter gift should begin with a basket and Target carries several.  As you can see from the picture, they had 4 (5 if you count the Ironman on on the shelf above) in stock.  One observation was that a majority of the Easter products I saw were specifically for girls.

Review:

Price: $6.00 (reasonable as you can use this yearly)

Age Group: Children

Must Have: If you are looking for a new Easter basket, then maybe

I next decided to browse through the basket “fillers” to see what options, if any, they offered to complete a “Disney-style” Easter basket and I was not disappointed.  I was, again, surprised to discover that all of the items were marketed for girls.  At least at the store I was visiting, I could not find any, or few, Mickey or Minnie items.  Your choice was either Disney princesses or non-marvel superhero’s.

The items I did find were all small toys, candy holders (adorable), or egg accessories.  Some of the products appear to be novelty items, but I was able to find a couple accessories that could save you money while visiting the parks.

All of us have observed, or experienced, the complete awe of children when the sun goes down and Disney begins displaying the “evening souvenirs.”  The glowing swords that you get smacked with as you search for a fireworks viewing spot, the spinning characters that light-up, and the glowing ears.  At Target, they had a couple items that fit into this category: spinning princesses and lighted wands.  The best part, they were more than 50% less than what you would pay at Disney, so buy now and hide them until your next trip!

Review:

Price: $1.50 to $6.00

Age Group: Children

Must Have: I wouldn’t count on these products lasting for more than a few weeks (but, again, I cannot say that with certainty), so I wouldn’t rush out to buy them.

Hallmark:

Thanks to a hot tip (thanks Christy), I was reminded that Hallmark does carry some Disney-branded merchandise.  I wanted to check-in and see what, if any, items they carried for Easter.

I only found two products (and I am not sure about the Donald one), a talking Thumper and singing Donald.  The Thumper was adorable and, not only spoke, but also thumped his foot!!  Donald sang a song when you pulled his ear, but I could not get the display one to work.

Review:

Price: Thumper was $24.95 or $14.95 with the purchase of 3 cards.  Donald’s price was not displayed.

Age Group: Any.  This could be cute for adults to display or kids to play with during the Easter season.

Must Have: I think if you can get a discount after Easter, then yes!

Disney.com

If specifically searching for Disney Easter products, one would assume that the online Disney store would be the place to search.  I typed “Easter” in the search area of the store and other than one Easter Vinylmation, a few t-shirts that were Bambi and Thumper themed, most of the items they had were these in several different colors:

In case you wanted to know what Mickey (they also had Minnie) looks like in an Easter Bunny outfit and in an egg, this is your product.  Now, maybe it’s just my taste, but I didn’t see the appeal of this item, at all.  Please don’t take away my Disney card, but this just took the Easter theme too far.  If I was, as Lou says, Imagineer for a day and had to design the Easter Mickey, I think it would be tasteful to just add the Ears.

If the egg is too much for you, you can get just a 17 inch plush (the Mickey-in-the-egg doll is 9 inches), for $.45 less.

Review:

Price:  Mickey with the egg: $14.95, Mickey in the bunny outfit: $14.50

Age Group: Children/Adults (decoration)

Must Have: Not in my opinion (feel free to let me know if this is something you would buy)

Ulta:

These next few products are not Easter ones, but I saw them and knew they would be a good gift for the teenagers, or adults, in your family.

Ulta (a local beauty store) had on display OPI brand nail polish that was inspired by Oz The Great and Powerful.  They were quite cute and had several different shades to choose from.

The NY Daily News had this to say about the Oz collection:

Puntastic names include ‘Lights of Emerald City’ and ‘When Monkeys Fly!’ and colors range from glittering metallics to soft pastels designed to be layered to create more innovative effects”

I did a quick internet search and found that this OPI collection can be found at many different beauty and cosmetic stores, as well as online.

Review:

Price:  Individual bottles $9.00 (the same as any OPI polish), set of 4 mini bottles $14.50

Age Group: Young adult and adult females

Must Have: If you are passionate about nail polish and don’t mind paying $9.00/bottle, then YES!

That is it for this, extended, Easter edition of shopDisney!  Please let me know if these products are something you would purchase for your Easter celebrations and if the reviews were helpful (or you didn’t agree).  Also, please let me know of any other products that you have found while shopping.

Happy Easter!
