To Tell The Truth…The Tomorrowland Walkway: An Interactive Game

To tell the truthYes!  You read that title right.  To Tell the Truth is back!  If you have no idea what I am talking about, I previously created a game called “To Tell the Truth…” which has a very simple concept.  I am deceiving you.  Well, kinda.  I will recite four stories about a certain topic, but only one of them is true, you guys have to pick out the one that is the real story.  You would then leave a comment arguing about why you thing one of the story’s is true or why one of them is false.  It’s a lot of fun!  My prior topics were the Haunted Mansion’s “Bride’s Ring”, the red walkway in the Magic Kingdom, the Pirates of the Caribbean Plunge, the windows on Main Street U.S.A  and the bird call in Epcot.  Now I can add this topic to that list:  the Tomorrowland walkway.

If you have been to the Magic Kingdom, you might have recognized that the pathway to Tomorrowland is a little bit different.  How, you may be asking your computer screen?  Well, next time you head to Tomorrowland from the hub, look down.   Of course, if you are wheeling a stroller or you are carrying a huge Mickey Mouse plush, you may have to look around that.  Notice the width of the path.  It is broader that the other spokes of the hub wheel.  My question to you is:  Why is the Tomorrowland walkway so much wider than the other walkways from the hub?

Story 1

I personally love Tomorrowland.  I don’t know exactly why, but it has always been my favorite.  I adore the use of imagination to come up with the idea of what the future may be like, and this area looks very pleasing to the eye.  The Imagineers loved Tomorrowland, too, and anticipated that the public would fall in love with this place along with them making it the most popular land.  The Imagineers decided to make the path wider as you arrive in Tomorrowland, to accompany the amount of people that they expect to arrive in that section of the Magic Kingdom.

Story 2
When you first arrive at the Magic Kingdom, which way do you go?  Do you head immediately to Adventureland on you left, Fantasyland down the middle, or Tomorrowland on your right?  Studies show that most people go to the right when they have a choice of which direction to travel.  Disney anticipated this and, to allow for a greater number of people choosing this route, made the Tomorrowland sidewalk bigger than all of the others.  Not only is it the path directly to the right of the castle but it is also the first path that guests walking down Main Street can choose which branches off to the right.

Story 3
Disney makes sure that everything has a backstory-and a good one at that.  When dreaming about Tomorrowland, the Imagineers thought about the vehicles of the future.  After many ideas being thrown around the table, they decided that the vehicles of the future would be wider than they are today to hold more people at one time.  The roads of the future would have to hold the now broader modes of transportation.  Even though none of these vehicles are seen, Imagineers made the walkway wider so their futuristic world would be complete.

Construction vehicles for the Tomorrowland section were larger than the rest of the Magic Kingdom areas due to the higher attractions, including Astro Orbiter, and at the time, the Skyway. The TTA is also a pretty high distance off the ground compared to the other Magic Kingdom attractions.  When the Disney Company was planning the size of the pavement, they realized that these vehicles would need a way to get in and out of Tomorrowland.  They decided to make the pathway bigger so that these vehicles could go through and do what they needed to do.  When building the other skyway stops, higher attractions, and attractions that required bigger construction equipment, the machines that were needed would just go through Tomorrowland before looping to Fantasyland or Frontierland, instead of paving another abnormally large sidewalk.

Okay, Disney fans, which one of these stories explains why the Tomorrowland walkway is so much wider than the other walkways from the hub?  Let me know which you think is correct (or if you prefer, which ones are not) below.
