I Have a Craving for…. HOT DOGS!

by Kendall Foreman

With Memorial Day cook-outs only just behind us, and days of summer fun, picnics and backyard parties ahead of  us, I thought it would be a great time to address one of the top summertime cravings—hot dogs.  Whether you enjoy them skewered over a campfire until black and crisp, backyard grilled with precise char-lines, heated slowly on an electric rolling cooker, split-grilled on a griddle, or steamed indoors to juicy, popping perfection, there is no denying the hot dog is an All-American staple.  Despite the fact that a vast and unique array of eating opportunities awaits Disney World guests, I always find myself hankering for a hot dog while I’m there.  Where do I satisfy my craving?

Here’s my list:

  • Casey’s Corner:  This corner counter-service dining location on Main Street USA in the Magic caseys-corner-disney-worldKingdom has expanded its menu in recent years.  Who else remembers when all that was offered was hot dogs, beverages, fries and the fixin’s bar?  My husband still mourns the spicy relish that used to occupy a space among the other condiments.  Now the menu includes a Chicago-Style Dog, Chili-Cheese Dog, Barbecue Slaw Dog and Corn Dog Nuggets.  I am looking forward to trying the Chicago-Style Dog; however—native Chicagoans skip the rest of this sentence—I will need to exercise restraint to keep from adding ketchup.
  • Fairfax Fare:  Located on Sunset Boulevard at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.  This counter-service dining location has been on my food radar since it added gourmet hot dogs a couple of years ago.  Currently, there are three specialty hot dogs on the menu:  Macaroni & Cheese and Truffle Oil Gourmet Hot Dog, Barbecued Pork and Coleslaw Gourmet Hot Dog and Chili Dog Gourmet Hot Dog.  Alas, I have not been to WDW since these became available; thus, I have not had the opportunity to try one, yet.  Since this post was submitted nearly two weeks prior to its actual posting, I have probably enjoyed my first Macaroni & Cheese and Truffle Oil Gourmet Hot Dog as of your reading it.
  • The Launching Pad:  Situated in Tomorrowland in the Magic Kingdom, this counter-service restaurant also features specialty hot dogs.  The three entrée items include:  Philly Cheese Steak Hot Dogs, Coney Island Dogs and Taco Hot Dogs.  When faced with these choices, I will likely choose the Taco Hot Dog because I rarely pass up the opportunity to eat Mexican food.
  • Storybook Circus Hot Dog Cart/Frontierland Hot Dog Cart:  These two carts are positioned in the Magic Kingdom.  Each offers standard hot dogs.  Being that these are kiosks, they do not provide the wide range of condiment/topping options that are available at other locations; therefore, I recommend these two only in the event of an incredibly intense hot dog craving (e.g. I can’t make it back to Casey’s Corner on Main Street).

Where do you satisfy your hot dog craving?  Have you tried any of the menu items mentioned above?  If so, what did you think and would you recommend what you had?

Kendall began visiting Walt Disney World in 1991 with her family and has continued to visit the resort with her husband.  As a child, she and her family filled vacations with challenges such as “How many times can we ride Splash Mountain during SpectroMagic and the fireworks?” (Answer: 7)  Now, after marrying a converted Disney skeptic, she and her husband enjoy challenges such as “How many hours can we eat nonstop at the Food & Wine Festival?” (Answer: 4)
