Plus… Handful of Summer refurbs on tap around the Parks, Update on remaining celebrity lineup for Star Wars Weekends, and more!
by Don Myers
The Summer Season is finally upon us! Time to open up the pool, fire up the grill, and light up the tiki torches. And things are also heating up at the Vacation Kingdom of the World, as the kickoff to the “Monstrous Summer” has officially begun. So let’s get right to it, time for the latest edition of the WDW Radio Newswire….
We begin this edition of the Newswire inside Magic Kingdom, as Celebrate the Magic has just debuted its special Summer edition of the nightly projection show. This new Summer edition of Celebrate the Magic began its run on Friday May 24th, and it joins a list of special editions that also includes Romance (Jan/Feb 2013) and Holiday (Nov/Dec 2012).
We continue in Magic Kingdom, as the Summer Season has also brought with it a lengthy list of upcoming attraction closures. Our first stop is the tiny town of Tumbleweed, as Big Thunder Mountain Railroad has a minor two-day closure on tap for Saturday June 22nd and Sunday June 23rd. Our next stop takes us over to Adventureland, where another brief closure has been scheduled for Pirates of the Caribbean in July. This refurb was originally slated for late June, but the attraction will now be shut down from Saturday July 27th through Tuesday July 30th. Continuing in Adventureland, we find an upcoming refurb on tap for the Jungle Cruise. The boats will be on a six-week hiatus beginning Monday August 19th, with a re-opening date scheduled for Tuesday October 1st. Our next stop takes us over to Fantasyland for an update on the scheduled June closure for Prince Charming Regal Carousel. The attraction will now be facing some downtime in August, as the new closure date is set to run from Thursday August 1st through Wednesday August 21st.
Time to park-hop over to Hollywood Studios now. For this newsbit we venture over to the Streets of America, where those silly Muppets have scheduled a Summer Vacation for MuppetVision 3D. The show will be on hiatus from Tuesday August 6th through Monday September 2nd, putting the total closure time for the attraction at just under four weeks.
For more news out of the Studios, let’s take a look at the remaining celebrity lineup for Star Wars Weekends. The first two weekends are in the books, but two weekends still remain. Here’s a look at the lineup:
Weekend III takes place from May 31-June 2nd and features Warwick Davis (Wicket the Ewok- Episode VI), Tim Rose (Admiral Ackbar- Episode VI), and Sam Witwer (Darth Maul- Clone Wars animated series).
Weekend IV takes place from June 7th-9th and features Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca- Episodes III, IV, V, and VI), Billy Dee Williams (Lando Calrissian- Episodes V and VI), and Tom Kane (Yoda- Clone Wars animated series). As was the case in years past, if you wish to obtain a celebrity autograph you must secure yourself a FASTPASS for that particular celebrity. FASTPASS tickets for each celebrity can be found at the front gate and availability is very limited, so it’s highly recommended you arrive before park opening if you wish to secure one.
Well that’s gonna do it for today’s update. But before we call it a wrap, let’s welcome back one of our most popular segments here on the Newswire…The POLL Question! The poll has been down recently due to a glitch in our software, but fortunately the problem has been fixed and we’re officially back in business! With all the refurbs on tap this Summer, I thought we’d put this week’s focus on attraction closures. Here’s a look at the question:
