Plus….BoardWalk Bakery back in business after refurb, Monsters University characters making their presence felt, and more!

by Don Myers

As the calendar shifts from April to May, we find ourselves in the full swing of Spring. The 2013 Spring season may be center stage right now, but there’s already some major news on the horizon for Spring 2014. So let’s get right to it, time for the latest edition of the WDW Radio Newswire….

FOF-Tangled-wLogo-640x426We begin this edition of the Newswire with some exciting news on a new parade coming to Magic Kingdom next year. The Disney Festival of Fantasy parade will be making its grand debut in Spring 2014, and the parade will put its primary focus on the characters from New (and old) Fantasyland, including Peter Pan, Sleeping Beauty, The Little Mermaid, Dumbo, Pinocchio, and more. The parade will feature an all new assortment of floats, and an original soundtrack will also accompany the vibrant caravan. The addition of Festival of Fantasy does however spell an unfortunate demise for Celebrate a Dream Come True, as the parade has been scheduled to conclude its run at the end of 2013. For a complete look at the official announcement, click here.

For more news out of Magic Kingdom, let’s head over to Prince Charming Regal Carousel. The attraction is scheduled for two weeks of downtime set to begin at the end of the month, as the carousel will be closed from Tuesday May 28th to Monday June 10th.

Time to park-hop over to Hollywood Studios now for some character meet and greet news. Mike and Sully will be taking a brief hiatus from their greeting spot on the Streets of America later this month while the location is re-themed for the Monsters University prequel due out this Summer. The location will be updated and remodeled to resemble the Student Union building from the film. The refurb will begin on Tuesday May 14th, and the re-opening date is set for Friday May 24th.

For more news on the lovable  monsters, it’s time to shift our attention over to the WDW Monorail System. In the April 26th edition of the Newswire, I reported that Monorail Black had been covered in an Iron Man wrap in anticipation of the upcoming release of the Iron Man 3 film. Well, it looks like another member of the fleet has been designated for promotional duty, as Monorail Teal is now cruising the beams with a series of Monsters University graphics on its outer shell. Mike, Sully, and the rest of the crew have all made their way aboard Monorail Teal, however this is not a full wrap as we have seen with past versions. The teal stripe is still quite visible, as the characters and other graphics are simply fixed to the windows and sides. It may not be quite as fancy as the previous wraps, but it still gets the job done as far as advertising goes.

For our final bit of news, it’s time to indulge our tastebuds at BoardWalk Bakery. The bakery re-opened Boardwalk Bakerylast week right on schedule, and with its reemergence came an expanded menu and all new decor. The bakery closed up shop back on January 6th for a refurb that saw quite an expansion at the venue. Construction took nearly four months to complete, but the operation was a complete success, as the bakery has now doubled in size. This extra space is a most welcome addition, as on many days in the past lines would stretch well outside the confines of the bakery doors. And as mentioned earlier, the menu at the bakery was also revamped, as there are now several soup, salad, and sandwich options to go along with their familiar assortment of delicious baked goods.

Well that’s gonna do it for today’s update. We’re still trying to work the kinks out of our new polling software, so unfortunately the poll question will remain on hiatus for one more week.
