Does anybody ever PLAN to fall in love?  It just happens, right?  When you least expect it.  You’re just sitting somewhere, and bang, cupid’s arrow hits you square in the heart…..  and your life is never the same.

I recently had this happen to me.  I fell head over heals.  And, yes, my husband is aware and not thrilled, to say the least.  But reason cannot control the power of one’s heart, so in love I am, and in love I will remain.

It happened on Friday night.  My husband and children were watching something on television, which I was feigning interest in.  I snuck my phone out to check Facebook, and I saw a new post by Oh My Disney (a great blog run by the Disney Company–I highly recommend.)  I always love their posts, and was curious by the title: “Wake Up With Disney.”  Surreptitiously, I clicked the link and started to read.  My heart started toWake Up beat a little faster as I read the post: a new app that allows a Disney character to wake you up?????  My hand trembled in excitement as I tried to remember how to find the app store on my phone (and given that we were having “family time,” I couldn’t use my usual strategy–ask my son to find it for me.)

I found the app store icon without TOO much trouble, and searched “Wake Up with Disney.”  The screen fluttered and then, there is was.  It was like the clouds parted and the angels started to sing.  I hit “buy” (it’s 99 cents, by the way) and slid the phone next to me, made a comment about the show (you know, to demonstrate that I was indeed paying attention), and waited….. A commercial!  I pulled out the phone and saw the app was ready.

Remember your first love?  How your decisions were not always logical, but clouded by the giddiness of feeling accepted and understood?   THAT is how I am with this new app.weather

For a moment, I will be serious: as the title of the app suggests, this is primarily, though not exclusively, an alarm clock application for your phone and is similar in spirit to the Walt Disney World wake up calls (which I love, except for the last day…. having Stitch yell at me to wake up at 4:30am just to go home is cruel and unusual….)  The app currently features Donald Duck, though information on the Disney Interactive site indicates other characters will be available in the future.  In addition to the alarm feature, the user can change Donald’s clothes, poke his belly (which if you do it too often leads to a Donald-tantrum), and even play golf!   The app also alerts the user to the local weather (and Donald reacts appropriately).  The most delightful part of the app, however, is the alarm feature, which enables Donald to awaken the user.

The Donald alarm is vintage Donald.  Lot’s of commotion, yelling, and fowl-sound effects.  As my screen shots indicate, Donald not only yells and jumps but also makes all kinds of great facial expressions.  No pictures can do justice to the actual animation.

So, back to my story…. I had my phone on mute while experimenting with the options on the app.  I giggled internally as I poked Donald and watched him react to the local weather (which has been less than desirable lately.)  But, I KNEW I needed the sound.  So, I waited for a commercial, flipped the sound on, and let Donald do his thing.   At the first sound of Donald shouting “Cut it out!” my children flocked to me, climbing on my shoulders and across my lap to see the newest object of my affection. They poked him and laughed.. firefighterWe changed his outfit, played golf, and laughed ourselves silly…  All the while, my husband sat quietly, his face growing less and less amused.  At last, he broke his silence…”Okay, what Disney thing did you find now?”

I grinned innocently yet sincerely and explained the app.  His face grew grim.  “You aren’t actually going to use that to wake up, are you?”  Batting my eyes, I replied, “Aren’t you glad I found this AFTER my school year ended?” He shook his head and muttered and turned on Deadliest Catch (decidedly NOT Disney) and I sleepingamused myself by having Donald shout during dramatic parts of the show.  That did NOT go over well, but remember, my judgement was clouded by my love.  My husband paused the show.  Reminding me of Beci Mahnken, he looked over his glasses at me and said, “Really?”  I frowned, set Donald to sleep mode, and endured the rest of the show without my love.  (PS: notice how the sunshine is in the shape of a Mickey?  How can you NOT looooooove this????)

Sniff.  So Donald and I will have to keep our love under wraps…. until a new character joins the fold.  I have no idea what might happen then–possibly a classic love triangle.  Stay tuned for that episode of As “The World” Turns.

For the record–I was not paid by Disney Interactive for this piece.  I bought the app, love the app, and took my own screen shots of my app.  Any passionate Disney fan would fall in love with it as I did.  No guarantees on how the loved ones in your life will react, though. Enjoy!

  1. I downloaded this app the first day I heard about it. I loved the interactive features. (It made me laugh to discover that shaking the phone made Donald woozy!)

Like your husband, my wife is not thrilled with having Donald for an alarm. So I’ll have to use the alarm for other things until we have a more gentle soul like Mickey or Minnie to give us our morning nudge.

Personally, I give this app a “MUST HAVE” rating for Disney fans.

  2. I bought this app as soon as I saw it as we’ll. I used it for the first time this morning and seriously love it. I actually laughed this morning as Donald was screaming at me to get up. I am so not a morning person so that is saying a lot.
No comment from the hubby yet, don’t think he heard it

  3. I never pay for apps, but I did for this. Can’t wait for additional characters.

I am immediately downloading this app. Thank u so much!

    Have a great day!!

  5. Already downloaded it when I read half of this post…BEST EVER!

  6. I don’t have an iphone and I don’t see the app when I search for it. Is it not available for all cell phones yet?

  7. According to the Disney website (http://games.disney.com/wake-up-with-disney-app), it’s only available for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. It could come to the Android OS in the future, but the website doesn’t say one way or another.

Thanks for the tip, best .99 I have spent in a long time.

  9. This is a very cute app! I also have the Disney Memories HD app & it has more character alarms: Mickey, Donald, Goofy & Minnie. It is free & another cute way to wake up or set reminders :)
