Plus…Cap’n Jack’s Restaurant set to close in August, Update on Disney Springs, and more!

by Don Myers

Another Fourth of July is in the books, and the dog days of Summer are upon us. But a lil’ news from the Vacation Kingdom of the World is the perfect cure for the summertime blues! So whether your lounging poolside, sitting at the umbrella table, or taking it easy in the comforts of the good ol’ A/C, it’s time to find that cozy spot and unwind with another edition of the WDW Radio Newswire…

Let’s begin this edition of the Newswire inside Magic Kingdom. The Walt Disney World Railroad has just been added to the refurb schedule, as the attraction is slated for some downtime at the end of September. The Railroad will cease operations on Monday September 30th, and the trains are scheduled to return to the rails three weeks later on Monday October 21st.

For more Magic Kingdom news, let’s follow the hub over to Fantasyland now. Another beloved attraction has recently been added to the list of upcoming refurbs, as Peter Pan’s Flight is currently scheduled to see some downtime this Fall. The attraction will begin its closure on Saturday September 28th, with a re-opening date set for Friday November 1st.

Time to park-hop over to Hollywood Studios now for some more news on the refurbishment front. It was recently announced that the Honey, I Shrunk The Kids Movie Set Adventure will be closing at the beginning of September for an eleven week refurb. The playground is scheduled to close on Tuesday September 3rd, with a re-opening date slated for Wednesday November 20th.

Disney Springs 2Our final stop today takes us out of the parks and over to Downtown Disney for an update on the Disney Springs project. Construction walls have recently sprung up around the parking lot in front of Planet Hollywood. The parking lot (Lot H) will be transformed into the transportation hub for Disney Springs. The lot’s centralized location makes it a fitting choice for the spot of the hub, and with construction walls now in place it appears as if the transformation of Downtown Disney to Disney Springs is finally upon us!

Nearby in the Marketplace, changes for the Disney Springs project are also on the horizon, as we now have an approximate closing date for Cap’n Jack’s Restaurant. The lakeside dining spot’s days are officially numbered, as the restaurant is scheduled to close its doors forever in mid-August. The exact date is still unknown, but if you want to eat at Cap’n Jack’s one more time before it closes you now have about four weeks to do so.

Well, that’s gonna do it for today’s update. But before we call it a wrap, let’s take a look at the results of our previous poll. The question was:

Which Magic Kingdom attraction would you be most upset to find closed during your WDW vacation?

. Haunted Mansion

. Pirates of the Caribbean

. Space Mountain

. Splash Mountain

. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad

. Jungle Cruise

. Peter Pan’s Flight

. Carousel of Progress

And the winner is…..

Pirates of the Caribbean with 31% of the votes! Haunted Mansion finished a close second with 24% and Splash Mountain rounded out the Top 3 with 15%. Once again a big thank you to everyone that took the time to vote! Now on to this week’s question:

What is your favorite Resort in the Magic Kingdom Resort area?

  1. Kevin W says:

So many of these closures are going to impact my vacation, but none hurts me more than the railroad. I’ve made it point to go on the railroad around the MK or Disneyland on every visit. Not this year, though. So sad.

As for Cap’n Jack’s, I will miss it. I frequented it often when I worked at WDW back in the 1990s. It was my favorite spot to grab a bite to eat before going to Pleasure Island to hang out at The Adventurers Club. Those are cherished memories. At least I have a Cap’n Jack’s shot glass to remember it by.

  2. Steamboat Eddie says:

Like Kevin, I make a point to ride the Walt Disney World Railroad every trip and even multiple times. I suppose it needs some freshening up though and so be it.

    Have a great day!

  3. Michael Campe says:

Like the TTA the Rail Road was a MUST ride every trip… but it will be back unlike the people mover in Disneyland which I still miss from my first and last rides in 1967.

  4. Cathy Mawhinney says:

Noooooo! We arrive Sept 30, so will miss two of our must do’s. I was looking forward to taking the RR from the New Fantasyland station.
As for Captain Jacks….. It’s one of the only restaurants on property I have had a terrible meal. Looking forward to something new.

  5. Paul says:

This is not happy news. One of our plans for our next trip was to ride PP Flight a few times to catch the small details. Also, the Railroad is a major part of our normal park process. Very sad now.

  6. Richie says:

If Splash Mountain closed during my vacay, I might just pack up and go home.
