WDW Radio Changed My Life

Editor’s Note: Please welcome to the blog someone who is no stranger to writing for WDW Radio: Liz Driscoll.  Liz has written many amazing posts for us, most recently during our EXPOlooza coverage of the D23 Expo.  Liz is now joining us as a regaulr contributor, writing about runDisney events and other wonderful ways Disney can change your life.  Thanks for joining the team, Liz!!

I know, I know… sounds like a divine light shone from above and a messenger appeared declaring, “Thou shall not pass up carrot cake cookies”.  No, it’s nothing like that.

When I look back, prior to 2008, I knew what a podcast was, but I did not listen to any.  Today, I have a dozen podcasts I listen to on a regular basis.  While reading The IMG_3335Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World, I read a blurb about the WDW Radio Podcast.  I tuned in to check it out and got hooked!

So, other than listening to WDW Radio, what has changed?

I went to a meet of the month at the Contemporary Resort on a hot July day a few years ago.  I met new friends who told me I had to get more active on Twitter.  Online Disney friends meet up at events and whenever our park days overlap.  We keep in touch in a way we would never be able to without social media.  I am excited to this day whenever my trip overlaps with a WDW Radio Meet of the Month!  What a great reason to visit with dear friends and make news ones in the process!

How many of us were at Walt Disney World when the Magic Kingdom turned the big 4-0?  Did you get the commemorative pin?  How long did you stay up?  Forty hours? Were you at EPCOT 30?   I started choosing my Walt Disney World trips to coincide with events like the 40 Hour Live Show or E-ticket weekends!  This year, I planned my summer vacation to attend the D23 Expo in Anaheim.  These are things I never would have considered before.

Early on, I learned about Lou’s desire to give back.  I have looked for opportunities to be part of the Dream Team’s efforts to support IMG_5606the Make-a-Wish Foundation.  Sometimes all it takes is someone pointing out a need to show you where you can help.

In 2012, I did my first runDisney 5K.  That led to the 2013 Royal Family 5K, Princess Half, and the upcoming Tower of Terror 10 Miler as well as the 2014 5K, 10K, and Half Marathon.  I went from believing I could never run a block to running three days a week!  Life changing!

So, why am I telling you this?  Why share the ways WDW Radio has changed me?  My hope is that sometime, some day down the road, each of us takes the time to consider how special this community is in our lives.  How long have you been part of the community?  How has it changed your life?  Is there something you haven’t joined in on yet?  If there’s something you want to do… to be part of… do it… now.  You never know what kind of change you may find in yourself!

Liz has been visiting Walt Disney World since she was five years old.  She is always looking for a nook or cranny of Walt Disney World as yet unexplored.  When not in Walt Disney World, Liz is a teacher in the Chicago suburbs.
