shopDisney: Disneyland Merchandise

Upon reviewing some of my past blogs, I realized one very shocking detail, I had not yet blogged about any Disneyland specific merchandise!  It has been 2 months since we were on the West Coast and I did write a post on the D23 Expo merchandise that we purchased (in case you missed this post in the middle of the Expolooza event, here is a link that will give you a glimpse at what we purchased at the event: https://www.wdwradio.com/2013/08/d23-expo-shopping-disney-at-the-expo/#comments).

Having now been back at home and away from the parks for just over 9 weeks (gasp!), I am beginning to feel the familiar tug to review pictures and reminisce about the time spent in the parks.  Upon review of the pictures, I located lots of photos to share with you of merchandise that was specific to the West Coast.

Not having visited another Disney park before, but having shopped at Walt Disney World many times and having seen the tags with both the Disneyland and Walt Disney World names, I was prepared to see much of the same merchandise I was already used to.  I was quite surprised in what I found and want to show you that they do sell quite a bit of merchandise that you can only find in one park.

Shirts are always a big category that are displayed in Walt Disney World and the number was just as high in Disneyland.  There were many designs that just had replaced the park name, but also several that I had never seen before.  It was nice to see some fresh merchandise and designs that the Disney design group had created.  From my point of view, I think that having some designs that you can only find at one park would generate more interest in specific items and force people to purchase more while they were at a specific “world.”

Price:  Average for shirts

Age Group: Anyone

Must Have: If its not something that you have seen before or you want a Disneyland specific shirt

These charm bracelets were amazing and I cannot wait to see if they have them at Walt Disney World (if any of you have seen them during a trip to the World, please let me know), they did offer some that focused on more on a character, but these were my favorites.  For the record, you could not remove the charms and there were no additional ones to purchase, but I suppose that if you wanted to add to this design you could add your own.

Price:  $39.95 – $45.00

Age Group: Adults

Must Have: If you will pay that price and wear a bracelet like this than YES

One thing I really enjoyed about this park and the shops were that some of them, especially Buena Vista Street focus on some Walt Disney, the man, merchandise.  As you can see, the Storytellers statue that sits on Buena Vista Street is the main focus, but having any focus on the that portrays Walt Disney as a real human is better than none at all.

I could not discuss DCA without mentioning the newest area, Carsland!  I am positive that you have seen pictures of the tire hats, but let me tell you, I have no idea how people walk around with one on.  They were big and heavy, but I guess one positive is the amount of shade they  provide and they would be perfect for shading you for the 2 hours spent in line for Radiator Springs Racers!  Of course, there were more subtle pieces of merchandise that focused on the Carsland area and they did a very good job at not focusing just on the Cars characters, but also the Route 66 theming as well.

Price:  $24.95 for the tire hat

Age Group: Anyone

Must Have: It wouldn’t be something I would wear and not something that I personally would want to display.

This was just a fraction of the merchandise that I saw while I was at the Disneyland parks, but I wanted to show you that they do offer pieces and designs that you cannot find in Walt Disney World.  I hope that you will all have the chance to travel to other Disney parks and see what items they have to purchase which display areas or theming specific to them.  I believe that is one aspect that makes Disney special, you know what you will find in the theme parks, but how it is presented is always different.  My hope is that the uniqueness of merchandise continues and even grows in the parks, so that I can purchase even more Disney items than I already have!!  Have a wonderful week and remember, keep shopping Disney-style!

Sneak Peek:  Stay tuned next week for a special edition of shopDisney that will be spooktacular!

shopDisney is a bi-weekly blog that will focus on Disney merchandise and products sold in the parks, in Disney stores, and in other retail markets.  We will explore product reviews, affordability, and to whom the products are marketed.  Like any other good product review, we will conclude with a rating scale for several different key components: price, age group, and whether the product is a “must have.”

Alyssa Wiseman (also known as ajwiseman09 in the box) and her husband Brandon reside in central Indiana (too far from Disney) with their 4 year shih tzu London Bridget and Bulldog, Maggie Mae.  Alyssa and Brandon enjoy traveling to Disney several times a year to see what is new and enjoy classic Disney.  While traveling, and at home, Alyssa is frequently shopping for Disney products and making a list of items to buy while in the parks.  Please follow Alyssa on twitter @ajwiseman09.
