A Taste of Disney: The Hollywood Brown Derby

ATofD1This week in “A Taste of Disney,” we will explore one of the many options available for Fantasmic dinner packages in Hollywood Studios: The Hollywood Brown Derby. Themed after an old Hollywood feel, you enter the restaurant under a red tunnel awning and realize the dining experience here will be one best summarized as “grand.” When your table is ready, you step down into the large, open, sunken dining room. The room has vaulted ceilings and the room is filled with tables and semi-circular booths. To make you feel like you are among the “rich and famous” in Hollywood, the walls are adorned with caricatures of celebrities and the main floor space has a grand piano. On the multiple occasions I have eaten at the restaurant, I have gotten the pleasure of being serenaded by relaxing piano music while I ate.

This restaurant usually books pretty quickly, so make sure to make an advanced dining reservation. Booking in advance will also give you the option to see if the Fantasmic dinner package is being offered on the night that you’re visiting Hollywood Brown DerbyStudios. After finishing dinner, you will be given tickets for reserved seating in the Fantasmic stadium for that night. You will enter through a separate gate and will get the benefit of skipping the chaotic line for the show.

In terms of food choices,  a wide selection of appetizers and entrees are available. I have heard rave reviews about the Cobb salad starter. Entrees include adaptations of seafood, chicken, tofu, bison, duck, and beef platters. Warm dinner rolls are also served. The Hollywood Brown Derby menu doesn’t stop there; many delicious desserts are available as well. Desserts include items such as cobbler, bananas foster, cheesecake, and “chocolate three ways.”

Overall, The Hollywood Brown Derby is oriented towards a relaxing dinner for adults wanting more unique food options. However, kids are sure to enjoy the experience too! If you haven’t eaten here before, give it a try. The restaurant runs a little more expensive than other choices in Hollywood Studios, but it is worth the try at least once.

This week’s recipe is for the famous cobb salad at The Hollywood Brown Derby and comes from http://www.magicalrecipes.net/mrpages/hollywood-brown-derby/cobb-salad-recipe.aspx.

Cobb Salad

Ingredients

1/2 head iceberg lettuce

1/2 bunch watercress

1 small bunch chicory

1/2 head romaine lettuce

2 medium tomatoes, blanched & peeled

1 1/2 cups cooked turkey breast, diced

3 eggs, hard-cooked

1 avocado

1/2 cup blue cheese, crumbled

6 strips crisp bacon, crumbled

2 tablespoons chopped chives

Directions

Chop all greens very fine (reserve some watercress for presentation) and arrange in salad bowl.

Cut tomatoes in half, remove seeds, and dice fine.

Also dice the turkey, avocado, & eggs.

Arrange the above ingredients, as well as the blue cheese and bacon crumbles, in straight lines across the greens.

Arrange the chives diagonally across the above lines.

Place on chilled plates with a watercress garnish.

Have any of you eaten at The Hollywood Brown Derby before? What was your experience like?

Kristin Casagrand is a student currently studying physical therapy at Bellarmine University. Born and raised in Pennsylvania, Kristin has taken many a family vacations as a child driving 24 hrs, cramped in the back of the car and fighting with her sister to get to Disney (definitely worth it though). She looks forward to sharing “A taste of Disney” with everyone each week.
