ENCORE BLOG: Build Star Wars into Your Daily Conversations!

Editor’s Note: Last May, Makena Wolcott celebrated the start of Star Wars weekends with this fun look at building the Force into your everyday life!   Our buddy Darth Vader has been quite visible this year, even popping up in the Disney Christmas Day parade.  So join in Makena’s fun and celebrate the spirit of Star Wars in your everyday life!

Stars Wars Weekends has officially begun.  Hollywood Studios is being flooded with fans, Snig and Oopla are up to their usual hijinks and Mickey and Minnie are dressed as beloved Star Wars characters.  Unfortunately for me and probably millions of others, I am not able to join in the festivities.  So instead, I am spreading the Star Wars magic here at home by trying to incorporate as many Star Wars quotes as I can into my conversations.  I started writing my ideas and wa-lah!  My blog was born.  So here are some DARTHquotes I am using and you can too!

“IT’S A TRAP!”

I know that there is a certain friend out there who knows I use this one A LOT.  We accuse each other of traps all the time.  This is a great line to use on April Fool’s Day.  Just call every pranking opportunity a trap!  It is said by Admiral Ackbar in The sixth movie, The Return of the Jedi.

“STAY ON TARGET.”

If you are in the box, you might not recognize this quote as something said in Star Wars, but instead one said by our beloved and missed Nolan Woodall.  As a moderator, he would say this to make sure everybody stayed, well, on the target that Lou was talking about.  To this day, we still use this to remind everybody to remain focused.  This is just one example of using this quote said by Gold Five when Luke and the rest of the team is trying to blow up the death star in Episode IV, A New Hope.  You could use this in a literal sense like if you are aiming an arrow or dart at a target, but it can be used metaphorically like I already mentioned.  You could slip this one into almost any conversation and no one would know that you are quoting Star Wars.

“You do have your moments.  Not many, but you have them.”

This is one quote that could only be acceptable to say to close family and friends.  You could offend someone VERY easily!  That being said, I still love this quote.  It was said by Leia in reference to, whom else, Han Solo.  It was the changing point in their relationship from hateful to almost romantic.  I can picture someone saying it when someone close to them says something witty.  I would definitely say it!

“Laugh it up, fuzzball!”

If you ever embarrass yourself in front of someone, this is the perfect thing to say.  It originates from The Empire Strikes Back when Han Solo said it to Chewbacca when he laughed at him after Princess Leia was ignoring Han’s obvious attempts at flirting.  It’s one of the first quotes I memorized on my own just because I thought it was hilarious.

“No reward is worth this.”

When you are doing menial labor or just something you don’t want to do at that moment, you can spit this quote out as a joke.   This is another one said by Harrison Ford’s character (you just gotta love him) in A New Hope.  He said this right after he said this to Leia:  “Look, I ain’t in this for your revolution, and I’m not in it for you, Princess.  I expect to be well paid.  I’m in it for the money.”  It really shows some of his character traits.

“Do… or do not.  There is no try.”

This famous quote, said by the one and only Yoda, is so recognizable that even the littlest Star Wars fan knows it.  If any sentence has the words “try” that is a cue to pull this saying from your creativity hat and use it in the conversation.  Of course, people might be wonder why you are talking backwards, but that is beside the point.

“There is a great disturbance in the Force.”

If you sense that something is wrong with someone, you might want to use this saying.  But, beware, you might get a strange look in return.  However, that is unlikely because EVERYONE knows about the force, right?  I sure hope so.  Anyway, this quote was made popular by Obi Wan Kenobi in Episode IV: A New Hope when Leia’s home planet was blown up by the Death Star.

“May the Force be with you.”

Arguably the most popular Stars Wars quote to be said in the history of the universe.  It’s all over merchandise and can be recognized anywhere.  This could be said as you are saying goodbye to someone, or if you want to wish someone good luck.  I find myself throwing this one out there every once in a while.  Of course, if someone hears this and has no clue where it comes from, it could lead to an awkward situation.

“NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

This one is more of a subtle one, unless you use it correctly.  When Luke finds out that his father is Darth Vader in Episode V, he then proceeds to scream “NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!” very dramatically, as anyone would if they would out that their arch enemy is actually their dad.  If you just say “No”, the full effect isn’t there.  You have to go all out, with the exclamation points and everything.

“What a piece of junk!”

This is said by Luke Skywalker himself in the first movie, A New Hope.  Han Solo tells him that he has a source of transportation that he can use to find Leia and it’s, well, a piece of junk.  This is a great one that can be used when someone is talking about something useless, like a chipped cup or homework.

“I’ve got a bad feeling about this.”

This is another very popular quote, but what makes this one different is that it is said in every single Star Wars movie.  It is said twice in the first movie, and at least once in to two sequels following it.  It has even been heard in other Lucas films out of the Star Wars series, like the Indiana Jones movies.  It kinda became a running gag through the films, and can make its way into your life if you let it.  This phrase can be used in the same places as “IT’S A TRAP!” You could even use both back-to-back!

__________________________________________________________

I hope you are able to inject some of these quotes into your everyday conversations.  It can bring a little magic to your day and to the person you are talking to.  You might have noticed that I only picked quotes from the first three movies:  A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.  I have never seen the prequels that were made after the original three came out or The Clone Wars television series-and I do not want to see them.  I think it might ruin Star Wars for me personally.  Anyway, there are so many quotes I could pick from three movies, let alone six and seasons of a TV show!  Do you have a favorite Star Wars quote?  I’d love to hear from you in the comments below.
