I couldn’t have asked for a more fitting lead-up to my first visit to the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California. The past nine weeks provided me the opportunity to participate in a highly popular Disney College Program seminar called “Disney Heritage.” Disney Heritage is an eight-week long (one week off due to holiday) Exploration Series offering that College Programmers can sign-up for at the start of their program. Be quick to enroll though because the four different sections of fifty spots are given away as quick as Radiator Spring’s FastPasses.
Each section of fifty or so participants meets once a week for two hours in one of the College Program housing sites. A College Program instructor will serve as the presenter/facilitator of a new topic each week. Disney Heritage is a chronological exploration of Walt’s beginnings, movement into animation, then films, television, and the parks we continue to love and enjoy today!
Whether you’ve read every Imagineering book or watched the various Disney documentaries, I bet there is something new you would learn in each session. The reason–because you’re learning with a community of Disney fans. We all have little tips and tricks we know, can share, and build off. We do a number of group activities in the classroom setting, but we also step outside into the parks a couple weeks to change things up. There are no assignments or papers, just good listening and learning each week.
Learning about Walt and Roy, their move out west, the birth of a theme park, all the “fun” with that opening day, and so much more really set the stage for me going to California just a few days ago. It was an anticipation-builder and I suppose that’s the ‘Ah-ha’ Moment I came across on my flight home. Disney Heritage was an anticipation-builder for me. What is your anticipation-builder? What gets you excited about your next adventure and what can you be engaging to start setting the stage? The show is always going. Be a part of it ;-).
*Note: Disney College Program & Internships offers a number of Exploration Series (eg. I also participated in “Leadership”), collegiate course offerings, and Career a Development Workshops. They can all be found on the Disney College Program website.
