A Taste of Disney: Food Truck Frenzy

Taste of DisneyThis week in ‘A Taste of Disney,’ the latest craze: food trucks. Personally, I am a huge fan of these mobile gems. Though I do prefer a sit down meal in a themed restaurant on WDW property, the idea of quick meals in the Downtown Disney® Area is a perfect option for shoppers or visitors looking for a meal on-the-go. Also, during peak times, the food trucks will help cut down on thick crowds at full- and quick-service locations.

Disney has announced that apparently a food truck park will be opening later this summer of 2014 in the area between Bongo’s Cuban Café ™ and the new Starbucks® in the West Side area of Downtown Disney®.

Earlier this year, Downtown Disney® hosted a food truck bazaar that featured many trucks including four “Disney-themed mobile kitchens.” These mobile kitchens were themed after various parks and attractions on property. A tour of this bazaar with Lou can be found http://youtu.be/1VArZmdGIZY

The four disney-themed trucks are currently:
Superstar Catering Food Truck (Disney’s Hollywood Studios® theme)
Namaste Cafe Food Truck (Disney’s Animal Kingdom® Theme Park theme)
Fantasy Fare Food Truck (Magic Kingdom® Park theme)
World Showcase of Flavors Food Truck (Epcot® theme)

Here’s to hoping the food truck park permanently opens soon so we can start doing some “research” and taste testing! 😉

In honor of the Fantasy Fare Food Truck selling corn dogs, I thought I would share a recipe for the infamous Disneyland® Corn Dogs! Enjoy! Recipe from magicalrecipes.net

Disneyland Corn Dogs

Ingredients

1 cup yellow cornmeal
1 cup flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup sugar
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 egg
1 cup milk
Vegetable oil for frying
2 pounds hotdogs (about 16)
16 wooden chopsticks
Ketchup and Mustard

Instructions

Preheat 1 1/2-inches oil in Dutch oven or deep fat fryer to 365 degrees.
Whisk together cornmeal, flour, salt, sugar and baking powder.
Add egg and milk, whisk until batter is smooth.
If needed, add additional milk or flour to create a batter that slightly mounds when poured from a spoon back into the bowl too thick and batter sluffs-off, too thin and batter runs off.
For easy dipping, transfer batter to a tall glass or quart jar.
Using a paper towel, pat dry hot dogs; insert chopsticks 2/3 the way through each.
Dip hot dog into batter so batter completely coats.
Allow excess batter to drip off for a couple of seconds; carefully place in hot oil.
Fry 2-3 corn dogs at a time for 2-3 minutes, turning as needed, until golden browned.
Drain on paper towels; serve with mustard, ketchup.

Do any of you have a favorite Disney food truck?

Kristin Casagrand is a student currently studying physical therapy at Bellarmine University. Born and raised in Pennsylvania, Kristin has taken many a family vacations as a child driving 24 hrs, cramped in the back of the car and fighting with her sister to get to Disney (definitely worth it though). She looks forward to sharing “A taste of Disney” with everyone each week.
