The Tomb Warriors of Epcot

IMG_1594 Let’s have a show of hands.  After watching Reflections of China or eating at the Nine Dragons Restaurant at Epcot, how many of you stop by the House of the Whispering Willows Gallery to visit with the Tomb Warriors?

Tomb Warriors: Guardian Spirits of Ancient China is a one-third-scale miniature replica exhibit of the famed Terracotta Army of Qin Shi Huan.  The original terracotta sculptures, which were discovered in 1974 in the Lintong District of China, number over 8,000 soldiers, horses, and chariots.  It is estimated they were created in 210 – 209 BCE as a form of funerary art to protect the emperor in his afterlife.  At Epcot, the replica sculptures number 197, and have distinct features and characteristics.  The best part is, you don’t have to travel to China to see these warriors—this army and a variety of exhibits that outline the history of the oriIMG_1601ginal Tomb Warriors are at Epcot.

There are other overlooked exhibits throughout Epcot’s World Showcase that are worth exploring.  The American Heritage Gallery at the American Adventure has an art exhibit about the 400 years of African-American achievement.  At the Gallery of Arts & History in Morocco, enjoy a colorful display of the arts and craftsmanship of Moroccan decorative arts.  Stop by the Mexican Folk Arts Gallery to see traditional Mexican wood carvings.   Learn about the culture and people from the country that inspired Frozen at the Stave Church Gallery in Norway.  There also is the Bijutsu-kan Gallery in Japan, but it is currently closed for refurbishment.
