The marketing materials from Dole Soft Serve (aka “Dole Whip“) states that Dole Soft Serve is “The Perfect Soft Serve for Everyone That You Serve.”  The company states that the dessert is “delicious, dairy-free, gluten-free and lactose-free.”

This is one of the many ways that this dessert has reached “Hall of Fame” status as the December 2018 WDW Radio Hall of Fame inductee (Dining/Restaurant category).

The History

Celebrations Magazine ran a story by Daniel Butcher in 2011 about the origins of the Dole Whip, which the Dole’s Blog ran in 2014.  We’ll provide the quick synopsis here, but make sure to check out the Dole Whip Blog link.

Dole took over the sponsorship of Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room in Disneyland in 1976.  They wanted to create a treat for the park, and came up with a dry powdered mix that would be added to soft serve.  In 1992, Dole contracted with Precision Food Inc. to prepare the exclusive mix (which helped Dole Whip and its different flavors reach food service distribution).

Other Flavors?

Yes, there are other flavors of Dole Whip?  Pictured below is a picture of an orange Dole Whip I purchased from Aloha Isle in March of 2012.

Orange Dole Whip

According to the Dole Soft Serve site, there are Orange, Strawberry, Raspberry, Mango, Pineapple, Lemon and Lime flavors currently in the market today.

The Merchandise

Let’s take a look at just a few of the t-shirts that have been inspired by the Dole Whip… available from The Castle Run (left) and MagicalNoms (right) at the WDW Radio Tee Public Store.  Click on the photo to go directly to the TeePublic page.

If you check out shopdisney.com and search “Dole Whip,” you’ll come up with a couple dresses, a sign, a headband and a wallet.  Remember, trademark issues mean they’ll show up as “Pineapple Swirl.” You do more searching (depending on the terms) and you can find socks and even a plush huggable.

Adult Dole Whips

There are even adult versions of the Dole Whip.  One of my favorites was at the 2013 Epcot International Food & Wine Festival.  On the left side of the photo was an Orange Dole Whip with Crème de Cacao White.  #DrinkEatResponsibly

Adult Dole Whip

Keep an eye out for adult Dole Whips at Tamu Tamu Refreshments in Disney’s Animal Kingdom.  You’ll find some Dole Whip-esque drinks like the “Spikey Pineapple” atTrader Sams Grog GrottoorTrader Sams Tiki Terrace. Trader Sam’s menus do not specifically list Pineapple Dole Whip as an item (as it does for Tamu Tamu).

Next month’s WDW Radio Hall of Fame Category

In January, we’re going to be inducting a new member of the WDW Radio Hall of Fame in the category of Music.  Close your eyes, imagine yourself in the parks, and listen closely?  What do you hear?  That music, whether it’s a background loop, the music of a parade or stage show, or Yeehaa Bob … that could be the next inductee into the Hall of Fame.
