There have been a variety of responses to the 2009 Disney campaign, “What Will You Celebrate”, but I was ecstatic when Disney planned to help guests celebrate birthdays. I may not have been the first to register my birthday, but I was definitely near the top of the list and I knew from day one what gift I was going to accept; the Fun Card. Once registered, I took the next five months plotting and planning my day at Walt Disney World and how I would spend my Fun Card.I haven’t looked forward to a birthday in a long time, and truth be told, I spent a lot of time trying to accept the fact that I was heading for one of those “milestone” years. I even wore a ’09 trading pin upside down to get used to the idea. It helped somewhat, but knowing that I was celebrating my birthday at Walt Disney World, for the very first time, ON my birthday helped me prepare. As it turned out, I couldn’t have asked for a better celebration. Not every cast member noted my birthday button, or my birthday visor with “Birthday Queen” on the brim, or the festive balloons on my bright green Mickey Mouse t-shirt, but many did. I have to admit that the percentage of guests wearing some type of celebration button does seem to be greater than those who don’t and I have a feeling that cast members are quickly tiring of acknowledging them. Those that did made me feel very special. I really felt more disappointed in guests to whom I wished a “Happy Birthday” that did not reciprocate. It certainly wasn’t enough to dampen my spirits, however. How could it when “Move It! Shake It! Celebrate It! Street Party” in Magic Kingdom explodes with energy and excitement for anyone with a reason to celebrate. I had a wonderful day at Magic Kingdom and EPCOT, and had a fantastic birthday lunch at the Grand Floridian Café. While at Magic Kingdom I was able to ride five attractions in two hours without having to use a fast pass, and enjoyed a free music concert at EPCOT as part of the Flower and Garden Festival. There were no “magical moments” to report, but I wasn’t expecting any. Just being part of the celebration excitement and having my family with me made it a birthday to remember. Three days later I went to Downtown Disney to use my Fun Card. I thought the Fun Card was going to be hard to spend due to the restrictions of which I was warned. Since I wanted to make sure that whatever I purchased would be a lasting reminder of my 2009 birthday, I had no problem making my choices. Jewelry, a print, two kitchen items and a plush Birthday Mickey cost me $1.69 after deducting the value of the Fun Card. Thanks Mickey! The “What Will You Celebrate” campaign couldn’t have come at a better for me. The campaign may have limitations, but they certainly didn’t limit me. Did it help me embrace my 60th birthday? Well, it softened the stigma, and I have some great memories and some nice reminders of my special day. |
