As you may know, in 2007 Lou challenged himself to run a half marathon. In 2008 that dream became a reality and along the way he has inspired many people in the Disney online community to follow suit. Wether they chose to begin running Disney races for health, personal accomplishment, camaraderie or just for fun, their numbers have been growing exponentially. Along the way we have challenged the same online community to run with us to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of America through the Dream Team Project. It is our goal to for your help to make a profound difference in the lives of children and their families by makeing a child’s dreams of going to Walt Disney World come true.

A little less that one year ago, I blogged out an invitation to the Disney online community to join our WDW Radio Running Team. Since that time we have grown from a group of eight to a Team of over 100!

In the past year, lead by Deanna and Steve, we have had runners of all ages, levels of experience and ability participating not only in Disney races, but local races as well. Proudly wearing our team colors while raising donations for the Dream Team Project benefitting Make A Wish.

In January, at the 2011 Marathon weekend our team raced not only in the half but also the full marathon as well as 4 goofy guys who ran both!

On the morning of the Half, according to Lou, I dragged him out of his soft comfy bed to take him to the race start for the first time, gathering the Team before the race. It was a cold morning that none of us will ever forget. The excitement was palpable and seeing these wonderful people here supporting a cause so near and dear to our hearts truly left me in awe.

As the team headed to the start, we headed to wake up Beci and leave for the Magic Kingdom to await their arrival! One by one and two by two we cheered our team onward to the castle and beyond

That afternoon, during the meet of the month, the team had the opportunity to exchange race stories and tips for the following day.

The Morning of the Marathon, we once again headed to the Start to support the team. This time we knew what we were doing and this time we had a plan! GO TEAM!

Again, we hit the Magic Kingdom early cheering the Team on for a few hours before heading to Epcot to welcome them back on their last mile! What a great day!

We also had non-running Team members who choose to wake early in the morning to find a place on the race course to stand, often for hours, and support their team as they make the journey though the parks.

Later that evening we had an informal Team meet where the team shared their race stories and excitedly talked about what they wanted to do next year!

What an amazing weekend we had. We met new people with a common goal and forged friendships that we now hold dear.

Throughout the year we have gained many new members and our WDW Radio Running Team has been represented at the Disney Princess Half, Expedition Everest 5k/scavenger hunt, Disneyland half and the 2011 Wine and Dine Races. Our members have run representing the Team in local races from New York to California, Las Vegas to Texas as well as Ontario Canada!

On May 22, 2011 a devistating tornado hit the town of Joplin Missouri. The destruction and aftermath of this storm played out in the news for weeks after and the residents are still rebuilding thier homes, businesses and lives. Amoung the souls called home that day were Lorie and Glenn Holland, having just returned from a week at Walt Disney World in Florida in celebration of their 15th wedding anniversary.

Just two months before, Lorie had contacted me and registered to become a member of the WDW Radio Running Team:

“Valerie,

I’d love to be a part of the team. I’m registered for the Disney Half in January 2012. Looking forward to sharing the training woes online and to meet everyone in January.

Thanks, Lorie Holland

aka Minnie Lor on all the various forums”

Lorie chose to join our team and race with friends to benefit “The Dream Team Project” which raises funds The Dream Team Project through Make A Wish, specifically to send seriously ill children and their families to Walt Disney World. It was her wish to bring magic to the lives of children who needed it most. Through the work of wish-granting organizations, The Dream Team Project is helping a child and their family now, giving them time away from the grim reality of hospitals and doctors, and a chance to smile and feel better, even if only for a little while. The happy memories the family creates, however, will last a lifetime.

As a trubute to Lorie and her husband Glenn, we are selling these WDW Radio silicone bracelets for a minimum donation of $1.00 per bracelet (higher donations accepted and appreciated). All proceeds from the braclets will be donated to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of America through the Dream Team Project in Memory of Lorie and Glenn Holland.

Bracelets can be purchased from me during during the Wine & Dine race weekend activities for a minimum donation of $1.00 per bracelet, (higher donations are also appreciated and encouraged). Any remaining bracelets will be available for purchase directly from me from now through November 23, 2011.

Please remember that 100% of the proceeds from the sale of these bracelets go to Make-A-Wish Foundation of America in Memory of Lorie and Glenn Holland.

Help us reach out and make one of the last acts of kindness Lorie had done become a reality.

Thank you.

Some time ago, during one of my WDWRadio LIVE video broadcasts and chats, it was running along (as usual) — maybe even 6 or 7 hours of broadcasting late into the evening. For some odd reason, I said that I could (and should) do a 24-hour show. Well, none of you forgot – and neither did I.

So I’m happy (proud? scared?) to announce that I WILL keep to my word, and do a 24-hour LIVE broadcast and chat, and in the process, coordinate a number of activities, events, and other surprises along the way.

But here’s the best part – I won’t be doing it from my home. I’ll be doing this in the Walt Disney World® Resort. That’s right! I’ll be broadcasting right from not only my room, but the parks, restaurants, maybe even attractions! Who knows where I may go or what we might do! I’m still working on details and will reveal more of the exact schedule as we get closer to the event.

So if you’re planning on being in the Disney Theme Park at that time, or if you now have the excuse that you needed to go, please come on by, be a part of the fun (and help keep me awake!). “Home base” will be at Disney’s Beach Club® Resort, and big thanks go to Beci Mahnken from MouseFan Travel for generously providing the room for the weekend.

So when is this going to happen? I plan on starting around 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 22 and (hopefully) finishing at 10 a.m. on Sunday, May 23.Â

One thing I DO know is that it is Star Wars Weekends, so on Saturday, May 22, I’ll also have the WDWRadio Meet of the Month at the Studio Catering Company Disney’s Hollywood Studios from 2:00pm -4:00 pm, so you can come by, share in the fun, enjoy Star Wars Weekends (and help keep me awake!) As we get closer, I’ll announce more details and a tentative schedule. I’m working on a few surprises, so stay tuned!

Join us for a very special evening with a private viewing of IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth, enjoy some tasty treats, and help make a difference during the 24-hour live event!

Date: Saturday – May 22, 2010
Time: 8:15 pm – 9:30 pm
Location: Epcot – Meet location TBA

Cost: $25.00 per person PLUS a minimum $5 Make-A-Wish donation (Includes select desserts, beverages, tax, gratuity and Paypal fee) Â Please note that no walk-ups are allowed, as tickets MUST be purchased in advance.

If you would like to attend, click here for details and to purchase tickets

If you’re looking to come down and join us that weekend, MouseFan Travel has special rates on Disney resorts (value, moderate and deluxe) with significant savings as long as you book by April 19. 2-night package starting from $89 pp/do! You can get more information and a quote from them here.

Stay tuned to the show and the site for more details… and check out the Facebook event page as well!

This is going to be fun! So as they say in the Festival of the Lion King: “It. Is. Time!”

NAPLES, Fla. (March 29, 2010) – To further its efforts to raise money to grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to visit the Walt Disney World® Resort, the Dream Team Project, through its founder, Louis Mongello, today announced its sponsorship of the Make-A-Wish Foundation of America.

This new sponsorship will afford the Dream Team Project the ability to be more involved in the wish-granting process and to sponsor the individual wishes of numerous children throughout the year, fulfilling their dreams of visiting the Walt Disney World® Resort. Through online donations, special events, auctions and various other activities and functions, the Dream Team Project hopes to make a real difference in the lives of those who need it by bringing some much-needed Disney “magic” to children and their families.

Lou Mongello, founder of the Dream Team Project, knows first-hand the pain that life-threatening medical conditions like cancer can inflict on victims and their families, having lost his father and both in-laws to cancer. ”By sponsoring the Make-A-Wish Foundation, more of the donor’s gift will go directly to support the wish, which is important in making every dollar count,” says Mongello. “We are excited about working hand-in-hand with the Make-A-Wish Foundation, which, like Disney, knows firsthand about making real dreams come true. Rather than donate money to research, I wanted to help children and their families now, when they may need it most – to make a difference today. Children and families who may be suffering physically, emotionally and spiritually are also often struggling financially to pay for hospital bills and other medical expenses. Not only is it difficult to deal with the illness itself, but often children are confined to a hospital or bed. By granting their wishes to go to a Disney Theme Park, we can help make children’s lives a bit brighter by spending some time away from the hospital, and in one of the happiest places on Earth. These children can, even if just for a few days, forget about the pain and fear of their medical treatment, while parents and siblings can focus on enjoying time together, rather than the stress of the illness. The granting of wishes like these will undoubtedly bring smiles and joy to the children and their families that will likely have been absent from their lives, and create wonderful memories that will last a lifetime.”

Since its inception in 2004, when Mongello began donating proceeds from the sale of his Walt Disney World® Trivia Book to this cause, the Dream Team Project, through various events, auctions and fundraising initiatives, has raised nearly $90,000 to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Illustrating the power and compassion of the Disney community, a single auction in 2009 raised $26,000 in just a few hours.

About the Dream Team Project: The Dream Team Project was founded by author, webmaster, and podcaster Lou Mongello for the purpose of support the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Portions of the proceeds from the sale of all merchandise sold on WDWRadio.com http://wdwradio.com/ , as well as personal donations made by Lou Mongello from sales of the Walt Disney World Trivia Books, donations from WDWRadio.com “Family Members” and friends, and the proceeds of special fundraising events run by the Dream Team Project are all used to help make the life of a child a bit brighter during a difficult time for them and their family. “Because you can’t smile on the outside without feeling better on the inside,” is the slogan chosen by the Dream Team Project, because it sums up the purpose of their mission. There are many fundraisers for medical research, which is in need of funding, but that money may not help a family suffering today. Through the work of Make-A-Wish Foundation of America, we are helping a child and their family now – giving them time away from the grim reality of hospitals and doctors, and a chance to smile and feel better, even if only for a little while. The happy memories the family creates, however, will last a lifetime. For more information about making a donation and becoming a part of the Dream Team Project, visit their website at http://DreamTeamProject.org

About the Make-A-Wish Foundation: The Make-A-Wish Foundation grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. Born in 1980 when a group of caring volunteers helped a young boy fulfill his dream of becoming a police officer, the Foundation is now the largest wish-granting charity in the world, with 65 chapters in the United States and its territories. With the help of generous donors and more than 25,000 volunteers, the Make-A-Wish Foundation grants a wish every 40 minutes and has granted more than 188,000 wishes in the United States since inception.

Before the 2009 MagicMeets becomes a distant memory, I wanted to share with you the letter that was read during the announcement of the auction totals:

“Dear Pat and Lou,

I just wanted to take a moment to give you a quick history on how this whole thing began.

It was back in January. I had just left the Tomorrowland Noodle Station, after having a great time at Lou’s first “Meet of the Month.” Since my kids were back at the room for a nap with my wife, and she gave me the go-ahead to have a little down time of my own, I decided to head over to Space Mountain for a quick ride.

While waiting outside of the ride for my FastPass time, I met a guy about my age, and his young son; they were both named Steven. They too were waiting to enter. We spoke for a few minutes and he was a bit concerned that his son wasn’t actually tall enough to get on the ride. He seemed very worried that Steven would never get to go on Space Mountain, as it had been the ride he was most looking forward to.

As our conversation continued, I realized that Steven was here on a Disney World vacation as a guest of Make-A-Wish. He had been diagnosed with cancer and according to the prognosis, this would be his one and only trip.

Now, perhaps the cast member would let him “slide” and enter, even though he was not the required height. But instead of taking that chance, I walked the both of them over to the nearby popcorn stand (I know you know the one, Lou) and we stuffed some folded napkins into little Steven sneakers until he was tall enough to make it on the ride.

(I do not promote this as a way to get you children onto rides before they are “legal” height, but never one to play totally by the rules I thought it was more than appropriate given the situation.)

To make an already long story just a bit shorter, we all entered without a hitch, they rode in the same ride car as I did and after they thanked me profusely, we went our separate ways.

I headed back to my room, taking them with me in my mind. A long bus ride back, alone, gave me time to think and be thankful for the good health of my own little ones.

We seem to float through the parks, always talking about the days when our own little ones will be able to join in and enjoy the rides we all know and love…never giving a thought to the fact that, that might not be the case for some. In reality, none of us are promised tomorrow.

Upon returning home from this trip, the two Stevens still in my mind, I decided to see what I could do to help.

I am blessed in the fact that, mostly through my work, I have many friends who are in the position to help out financially and are generous enough to do so without hesitation.

So after making some phone calls and pulling some strings, I was able to help bring together a nice donation for The Dream Team Project.

I am so grateful to you all for inspiring me to move ahead and try to make a difference. I hope that, in turn, I can inspire others to do the same, and best of all…I feel like I ACTUALLY am making some dreams come true in the process….”

The letter was unsigned, but the attached check for $10,000 was.

I remember meeting Tony, Charlene, and their two adorable boys at January’s Meet-of-the-Month. Tony had “friended” me a short time earlier on Facebook, and had stood out as the only person who followed up an acceptance with a short chat introducing himself. I didn’t know Tony then, but he was friendly and funny in the chat, and we agreed to say hi at the upcoming Meet.

We didn’t spend a long time talking at that meet. I know I made some joke about being glad he wasn’t some sort of crazy internet stalker, and Tony and Charlene both expressed interest in being a part of the Dream Team Auction staff. They stood in a very long line to meet Lou, and then Charlene took the boys back to the room for a nap. I think a bunch of us headed off to another meet in Adventureland, and we went on with our days.

Tony and Charlene followed through on their interest in being on the auction team. They came down to Long Island for wrapping weekend, bringing enough food for an army and all of it so delicious we ate like kings. Charlene arranged and cellophaned dozens of lots, while Tony manned the camera and photographed everything for the previews and grabbed some great candid shots as well. And the whole time they made us laugh and joke and feel like we had known them forever. They stayed until late at night, even with a long drive before them, and those who remained after they left quickly felt it was time to call it a night, as the energy source that had been keeping us all running had just departed.

It was much the same at MagicMeets. Charlene and Tony arrived early on Thursday, and we quickly caught up and enjoyed a relaxing evening chatting and eating. Friday we worked on setting up the auction and Minnie’s Mart, and I could not have asked for better help. They were there from morning until late at night, helping everywhere and doing anything that was asked, and especially in the case of the displays at Minnie’s Mart, doing it better. And they were back Saturday morning, working the entire day at the auction, always with a smile, a joke, and a “What can I do to help?”

Somehow I knew after the first paragraph of the letter that it had to be Tony’s writing. Which is probably the only reason I could read the whole letter aloud without breaking down in tears: I had to know for sure. And I couldn’t be happier that I was right, nor more amazed that they were able to keep such a big secret!

I have often said that I truly believe that everything happens for a reason, not necessarily one we will understand or know about. Sometimes the only reason we meet a particular person is because they are here to give us a good kick in the pants and inspire us to do something we never dreamed we could do. Just as the two Stevens Tony encountered inspired Tony to do something incredible, I think Tony and Charlene, especially coupled with Justin’s keynote speech, gave us all a good pants-kicking.

Time will tell what wonderful things come out of it.

“In reality, none of us are promised tomorrow.” But we can work today to make tomorrow a better day for someone else. And in reality, that makes the world a better place for all of us.

Â

MagicMeets 2009 proved once again that Disney fans have the most generous hearts on the planet.

550 fans in the ballroom, and many others watching and listening online to WDW Today’s live podcast, said to heck with the economy, we’re going to make some Magic!

The final breakdown of the money raised for the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of America worked out to this:

The Celebrity MagicTunes and Arooga’s Karaoke meets on Friday night: $830

Minnie’s Mart on Friday night raised $1360. Then when I was packing up the few leftover items to take home, a little more shopping was done, so the new Minnie’s Mart total is $1410.

Note Cards, Poster Sales, and Donations: a few more donations were received after the sign was written up, and Lou didn’t realize he had a can full of money sitting on his WDW Radio table until after the meet was over… so the new total for this category is $1521.

Online donations as encouraged by the gang at WDW Today continued to come in after 4 p.m., and one made on Sunday morning I’m going to count in this total, since it was from a Dream Team staff member who couldn’t attend MagicMeets due to other commitments, so the online donation total is now up to $1680.

The auction itself raised $10,495.

Beci Mahnken & Mouse Fan Travel contributed $700. I’m heading to YouTube next to find out just what the Moonwalking Challenge was!

So that puts us at $16,676.

I like nice round numbers (except on birthdays), don’t you? So I’m chipping in $364 to make it an even $17,000. Makes the numbers much easier to remember, right?

Then there was Tony and Charlene.
The day hadn’t already been emotional enough, I guess, because they still had a surprise hiding up their sleeve. And they got CMO Justin in on it, just to mess with my carefully typed cue cards.
$10,000. I still don’t know what to say. Thank you isn’t enough. You are incredible!

That brings the Grand Total for this year, after all the last donations have been counted, to $27,000.

Wait, sorry, that just wasn’t big enough. Let’s try again:

$27,000

Thank you again to everyone who donated items, who placed a bid, bought some note cards or a poster, donated online or in the cash cans, or even just came by to say “good job.” Together we have made dreams come true, and there is no more powerful magic than that in the world.

Thank you to the Dream Team Project Auction staff – the best team on the planet! I could not be more grateful for and proud of all of you, for the work you have done and the dedication you have shown. The last week before the meet, I was emailing page after page of “summer reading assignements” – directions, policy, instructions, and reminders, that I have been told by the team member who works for NASA that “Not even the Space Shuttle has instructions this detailed.” I know I asked a lot of all of you, and you came through with everything I asked and then some. I am very lucky to call you friends as well as team mates. Janet, Lori, Lesa, Tracy, Linda, James, Valerie, Steve, Amanda, Brian, Tony, Charlene, Kate, Tracy S, Terry, Kathleen, Kathryn, and Cassidy. You guys are the best!

Thank you to the members of the Dream Team Project who helped with planning and wrapping and more throughout the year, especially Meg, Kellie, and April.

Thank you to Colleen and the MagicMeetsketeers for their help too. Colleen, Mary & Tacey made sure that our every need was attended to, from the tables being ‘moved just a little bit more’ to getting the team fed, and always done with a ‘Just tell me what you need and we’ll take care of it” and a smile.

Thank you to Fred, for allowing us the time and space to hold this event each year. It takes a special kind of person to give so much, and so much more than people realize.

Thank you to Lou, who got us into this to begin with. It was his dream to send a child with cancer to Walt Disney World that got this whole thing started. Almost $60,000 later ($3,822 + $9,000 + $20,000 + $27,000), the dream has grown a bit but still shines brightly as our inspiration and motivation. There’s lots more ahead for the Dream Team Project, and a lot more wishes to be granted out there.

The Dream Team Project is a great example of what can happen when people come together because they believe in dreams, they wish upon stars, and they care about making someone else smile. For a child who has their wish granted because of our efforts, the world has become a much happier place. I thank you for your support and your contributions, and for making dreams come true.

Thank you!

[EDIT 8/16/09 after a discussion with Fred, the Aroogas/MagicTunes total was incorrect. The total amount will remain the same after an additional donation to correct it.]

Since many of you may be first time guests at MagicMeets, and since there are some changes to the auction from previous years, I thought it might be helpful to post this information here:

Rules and Information for Bidders

Auction Format: This is a silent auction. In front of each item you will find a bid sheet. To place a bid on an item, print your name and the dollar amount you are bidding on that item’s sheet. There is a suggested starting bid listed on the item’s bid sheet, however if you are the first bidder you may bid lower. After a bid is placed on an item, you must raise the bid by at least one dollar. No cents, please!! The highest bid when close of bidding is called that shows a complete, legible last name and dollar amount will be declared the winner.

NEW in 2009 Close of Bidding: Bidding will end in 4 waves as follows:

Wave 1 — Pink Lot Cards — Items # 51 – 75 —- bidding ends at 1:45 p.m.

Wave 2 — Yellow Lot Cards — Items #Â 76 – 100 — bidding ends at 2:00 p.m.

Wave 3 — Blue Lot Cards — Items # 26 – 50 — bidding ends at 2:15 p.m.

Wave 4 — White Lot Cards — Items #Â 1 – 25 — bidding ends at 2:30 p.m.

When a wave is about to close, Dream Team Auction staff members will be stationed in front of the auction tables with the bid sheets. Please be sure that you are bidding on the correct item! During final bidding, you must finish placing your bid within 10 seconds of holding the pen. A bid must contain a fully printed legible last name and a dollar amount when time is called to be accepted. Dream Team staff reserve the right to nullify any bid deemed placed in an unfair or improper manner, based on these rules and our judgement, and all decisions are final.
Please remember, this is a charity auction and the goal is to raise money to help seriously ill children. Please conduct all bidding in a fair, respectful and proper manner.

Highest Bidders, Payment, and Pick Up: The list of highest bidders will be posted in the convention center lobby after 3:30 p.m. Payments for lots will be taken in the lobby until 6:00 p.m. Cash, credit cards via Firstgiving.com, or PayPal will be accepted for payment. After paying for your lots, you may pick up your items at the auction tables any time before 6:15 p.m. by showing your receipt to the auction staff at the tables.

Â

Thank you for helping make wishes come true!

The Dream Team Project Auction isn’t the only way MagicMeets attendees can help bring a little magic to those in need. Check out these other great ways to make a difference:

Celebrity MagicTunes
There is a minimum $5 donation at the door for event admission, and all proceeds will benefit both Deb Wills’ Avon Walk for Breast Cancer and The Dream Team Project.

Magic ‘Meets’ Arooga’s Karaoke Meet
Arooga’s is the new restaurant next door to the Radisson Penn Harris, home of MagicMeets. And for some more Friday night Fun, it’s a Karaoke Meet! A $5 charity donation will be requested in advance.

Minnie’s Mart
These beautiful cards will be sold in sets of 8 cards, 4 each of two designs, for a donation of $7.00 per set. All proceeds from the sale of these cards will go to the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of America.

Limited Edition Posters from Deb Wills
