The Sons and Daughters of Liberty

After doing some research, I came across a posting here at this website.
regarding this article:

In the 1970's a daily ceremony was held in Liberty Square in front of the Liberty Bell called "The Sons and Daughters of Liberty." The ceremony involved a fife and drum corps marching with a Cast Member in Revolutionary-era costuming. He/she would then choose a boy and girl from the crowd to be the official "son and daughter" of Liberty . This ceremony no longer takes place in the Magic Kingdom

I was one of these son's of Liberty in 1971. But there is no mention of the
Liberty Square medal which was given to each child. I have been trying to find any reference to such medal. I do have pictures from this time and place and I will post them soon..

Please let me know if anyone have any info on this Medal...

thanks....

Re: The Sons and Daughters of Liberty

I'm too young to remember this actual ceremony but Lou said back in his podcast about 1973.

I was involved though in something similar in the 90s when I was like an honourary member of the drum and fife corp, wearing a sache and triangular hat. Was given a scroll as a memento saying I took part.

Does this still happen?

OMGosh! I remember this ceremony! It's amazing how many things come and go and drift away from your memory until you get a little refresher! We were never lucky enough to be chosen, but that is so super cool! What a fantastic souvenir!

Re: The Sons and Daughters of Liberty

A very similar ceremony is still performed each day in Epcot, in the picture below you can easily see the little girl who has been picked, there is also a little boy, but you can just see his yellow sleeve to the right of the fife player and left of the flag bearer. I belive it is part of the early sets each day, so if you want to be sure to see it I'd go to the first set of the day of the Spirit of America Fife and drum corps (the Spirit of America Fife and Drum corps schedule is available on Steve Soares Site) and after the set when they stop to pose for pictures and answer questions, ask what time this set will be performed that day.
