I'd be willing to bet that D23 will have something pre-opening but I would also bet there will be little fanfare other than that.
I'll be in WDW from May 10 - 20 and will just miss the official re-opening of "Star Tours".
I've heard about 'soft openings' for other attractions before they officially opened but don't know anything about how this type of opening is handled.
Will I have to get a ticket of some kind and where? (I assume Guest Relations).
Are the openings scheduled throughout the day and will Guest Relations know when?
Thanx for the help!

Soft openings are basically "dress rehearsals". They're not official, the ride will (maybe) run occassionally in the days leading up to the official opening. Its so they can allow the new staff to run the ride with guests, make sure that the ride is running without technical complications, etc. Guest Services MAY be able to tell you if the ride is up or not, but its really luck of the draw. Maybe they'll run it for the public early, maybe not.
You might have better luck just stopping by the attraction and asking a CM if there might be a soft opening that day.
I thought it was opening on the 20th? Did that change?
Note:
Park hours for Hollywood Studios on May 20 have been extended
to 8am - Midnight due to SWW and Star Tours 2.

They aren't really good for anything,
but they still bring a smile to my face when I push them down a flight of stairs.

Soft openings are often a couple weeks or days prior to official opening.
They are sporadic and usually unannounced. Most recently the Haunted Mansion Quay. One hour early the CM's said not open today and an hour later it was open for a couple hours. Gives the Imagineers a chance to get the bugs out before the grand opening.

We happened to be around when there was a soft opening for Toy Story. It's kind of the luck of the draw. We stopped by the attraction throughout the day because sometimes they had the attraction up and running and other times they didn't. You can check with Guest Services, but I wouldn't count on them having too much info. Your best bet is to stop by the attraction and ask a CM. Who knows, you may get lucky and the ride will be running.
Good luck. Have a great time when you go.
