Question: can you really walk through the haunted mansion?
--------------------------------
Nikki,
Hi! Thank you for your question - and an excellent one at that!!
Actually you cannot walk through the Haunted Mansion. While there are service catwalks and stairs positioned throughout the building (hidden by walls painted black), there are many places where your ride car is actually suspended over an open area. For example, when you are in the séance scene with Madame Leota, there is actually no "floor" below you - there is a drop of about 15 feet to the floor below. So if you decided to step out of your car and try to walk over to get a closer look at Madame Leota's table, be careful - that first step is a doozy!!!![]()

In 1991 a girl decided to get out of the DoomBuggy to scare one of her friends and she fell and got her hair caught in the track. She lost some of her scalp. A friend of mine was working there at the time.
Yes, the HM movie is (somewhat loosely) based on this attraction, although the mansion and its location are more akin to the DL HM (southern mansion).
Actually, there have been other movies based on existing WDW/DL attractions:
The Country Bears Movie
Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl![]()
Coming Summer 2005 - Lou's Frontierland Adventures
And of course, there are plenty of other attractions based on movies, such as:
Peter Pan
Mr. Toad (R.I.P.)
The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh
Snow White
Star Tours
Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin
... can you name the others???![]()

Jungle Cruise was inspired by the Hepburn/Bogart movie African Queen
Brian

Actually, the Jungle Cruise was inspired by the 1955 Disney True-Life Adventures documentary "The African Lion," which was set in the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro and follows a family of lions through the changing seasons. This film provided the inspiration for Walt Disney and his Imagineers to create the Jungle Cruise.
The 27-foot long boats used in the attraction, however, were modeled after the motion picture "The African Queen," starring Humphrey Bogart and Katherine Hepburn
So I guess it counts anyway![]()
