The "real" pixie dust only comes from Tinker Bell, but the pixie dust at WDW are little mylar MM's like this: They (usually a child is chosen) sprinkle them during parades, mostly at the MK, but have found elsewhere too. They come in many metallic colors.

Any idea how a kid is chosen? So how can you collect pixie dust? Maybe I'm stupid but I just don't get the concept of it...

The children are chosen at random along the parade route by CM's who have a small paper bag of it. The child takes a handful. They throw it into the air at the command of a CM or character as certain floats pass.

To collect it all you have to do is you bend over and pick it up (be sure to wash your hands and/or use sanitizing gel afterwards) wherever you find it, before the CM sweepers get it. There are not many left over as the sweepers move in rather quickly.

The idea is if you find some pixie dust you will have a magical day, almost like finding a penny, but so much better!!!
