Could some please help me with what the monorail says in Spanish.

"Por favor..............de las puertas"

I have tried to research this, but everywhere I've looked the Spanish is wrong.

Por favor = please
mantenganse alejado = move away from
de las puertas = the doors

dont be sarcstic with me!!! I've gone over the transaltion n the past few hours with disney reps, and 2 spanish teachers from my area, and It doesnt work. It turns out to be "please it move yourself of the doors!!" does that make sense!!! I'm sure when you there its correct and Spanish speaking people can understand, but all I'm saying is that it doesnt translate well.

Hope you don't really think anyone (especially me) was being sarcastic. I took Spanish for 2 years, was engageed to someone who only spoke it at home, and the best I can do is "move-o", "door-o", "chupalupa" and "por favor"

I was trying to sleep, and the following thought hit me:


Poor flavor mayonaise-avacado = Bad guacamole
Day lost to "where does" = temporary amnesia


Translates to:
BEWARE: Bad guacamole causes temporary amnesia.

Funny related story:

The DC subway system changed their monotone "Please step away from the doors"
to an irritated "PLEASE, step AWAY from the doors." So many people complained, that they switched it back. However, people stepped away at the nasty message, and now they're back to ignoring it.

Spanish cannot be directly translated into English. As you point out, speakers of Spanish will figure out what it means. Spanish has many dialects as does English which contain many idioms (the way words are put together to form thoughts). For example, if I said "Sorry to hear he kicked the bucket.", Americans take that to mean someone died. Someone trying to translate that into whatever language will always end up with a man who kicked a bucket!

Disney has to use phrases that can be understood by a majority of Spanish speaking persons. The Spanish spoken in Cuban dialect is different from the dialect from Northern Mexico/Texas, which most Americans outside of Florida are used too/have learned. I could go on and on, but I think you are getting the message.

Another problem is that English is such a complex language. People trying to learn English are confused by words like "submarine", which could be a naval vessel, or a sandwich. However, some people in America call a "submarine sandwich" a "hoagie"--and so it goes with thousands and thousands of words and phrases.

As far as sarcasm is concerned, you have to understand the humor of the board members, whether here or elsewhere. Once you have been around awhile you will get to know who you can joke with, and who you can't. The art of sarcasm comes with age and experience. The older you are the better at sarcasm you become. It goes hand and hand with cynicism.
