I don't think I can help you, but after reading the above the first thing that came to my mind was Danny Kaye in the movie Hans Christian Andersen. Specifically, I am reminded of the song "Inch Worm."

Can you describe the movie? Who was in it? Any songs?

That Darn Cat ? Originally done in the 60s and remade in the 90s. I've never seen this one, so I'm not sure.

I gave the quote to "ask Jeeves" (www.ask.com), and came back with all kinds of results!
"Mile by mile, life's a trial. Yard by yard, life is hard. Inch by inch, life's a cinch."
-from Harriet Zernickow, Abilene, Kansas (taken from Guideposts, November 2003 edition)
Another time it is attributed to UCLA Men's Basketball coach Steve Lavin (any Disney films about him?)
Several sites list it as a children's limerick/verse.
So I guess it could have been used in a Disney movie, but it's not a Disney original.

Even websters online dictionary couldn't do better than this:

Inch by inch, life's a cinch. Yard by yard, life is hard. (references; author: unknown)

thanks guys!! I have searched it everywhere as well and I know it is not a Disney "original," however I was assured that it came from a Disney movie (non-animated.)
So, if anyone can help figure out the movie I would really appreciate it. Thanks =)

I wonder if perhaps it might have been used in "The Happiest Millionaire" it sounds right up Reverend Biddles alley , I'll check on this.

When you say non-animated, are you sure it can't be one of the live action films with animation segements? The movie "So Dear to My Heart" revolves around a scrapbook full of wise sayings and is set in the turn of the century, so the quote would be appropriate. The film is mostly live action with a few animated sequences.

I've never seen the film, nor do I own it, so I can't confirm. I've been trying to find you an answer in "The Disney Films", 3rd. ed. by Leonard Maltin. So far I'm up to the mid 1950's.

How did you come up with the question, may we ask???

The question was posed by another teacher...one who is apparently trying to send us all to the looney bin!!! I have never heard of "So Dear to My Heart." But, will see what I can find out about it. If it helps the teacher is approx in his late 20's and says he wastched it as a kid. ????

Knowing how Disney re-releases its films, he may have seen it new or on re-release, or even on TV. I just saw today that The Three Lives of Thomasina is for sale on DVD at Costco, along with a whole bunch of the older live-action films.

Is there anything else he can remember that might help us? :
