Disney restricts limits on Duffy merchandise purchases

WDW Magic is Reporting:

A lot of Internet discussion centered around Duffy being a short-lived craze that would not gain any real traction. Well, here we are in 2012, and Duffy is still going strong with both merchandising and his meet and greet location in Epcot's World Showcase.

In fact, Disney has now been forced to introduce a Duffy merchandise sales cap on all Duffy merchandise being sold in the parks and online. Guests will now be restricted to a maximum of 5 same-item Duffy purchases. This means that at anytime, guests can only purchase up to 5 of one item with the same SKU.

A similar scheme has already been in place at Tokyo Disneyland, where the limit is 3 items. The new sales-cap begins this Sunday, May 6 2012.

They can't possibly be this popular

So just who is buying up all the Duffy merchandise? I was in the World a few weeks ago and saw Duff out in the World Showcase. A few in line to meet the Duff but not the lines you see for other Characters. I went into The near by Duff store and only a handful of guests inside.

Yes Duff is a cute generic brown bear, soft and cute. Cute enough to limit purchases? Is there another market for Duff and Stuff? Who would want to purchase 5 identical outfits?

I can't say I saw a single child walking around with Duff in my week, though I wasn't really looking however if there were hoards of guests glomming Duff n stuff I likely would have.

Is this an adult craze of children's stuffed, like Cabbage Patch dolls and Beanie Babies. I'm missing something.

Perhaps they're thinking if they restrict how much you can buy people will be curious about this extremely popular character and pay more attention to him.

They can have my quota, I won't be buying any Duffy merchandise

Lots of the Duffy merchandise is ending up in the Outlet Stores for reduced prices, including the Super Large Duffy Bears and the outfits.
I really don't understand the limit. I can see it making sense in Tokyo since they are crazy for Duffy there, but he is not so popular here in the US.

I don't get this one. Personally I thought that Duffy was probably at the bottom of the popularity scale because kids want "character" merchandise. It kind of shocked me when I read this last week.

I know it's a big seller over in Japan. Here, I think it's more reverse psychology. Tell people that there's a limit and now suddenly it's a commodity. I wouldn't be surprised if they started stocking Duffy a bit more lightly on the shelves to create the appearance of a shortage, then hit the back where there are TONS sitting around and 'luckily' find a few more to add on the sales floor.

This has literally nothing to do with what Lou likes. Why did you even bring him up? This does, however, have everything to do Disney forcing a character that is wildly popular only in Japan on Americans that barely want anything to do with it. Disney is enforcing a purchase limit on something that doesn't sell to begin with.
