Accident closes portions of highway leading to Port Canaveral
by Leah Zanolla
Jan 22, 2011
A tanker truck explosion on Friday claimed the lives of two people and will affect traffic on SR-528 (referred to as the Beachline) in the upcoming days. According to WFTV, a pickup truck crashed into the tanker truck and both vehicles caught on fire.
As of the writing of this article, both eastbound and westbound lanes of the highway are closed for a mile stretch at US1 and the Banana River. Authorities have also closed Courtenay Parkway due to the accident happening on that road's overpass. The Florida Highway Patrol estimates westbound lanes would be closed 24 to 36 hours and eastbound lanes could be closed as long as 25 days due to the magnitude of the accident. These closures will directly affect the normal route used to get to Port Canaveral as the inaugural cruise of the new Disney Dream gets ready to set sail.
A thread on the DISboards suggests guests traveling to Port Canaveral take US1 heading South to Highway 520 passing through Cocoa, Merritt Island and then Cocoa Beach.

I've been on the Disney Cruise twice. Awful ports of call and more boring than other cruises I've been on. Any delays en route on that hour plus trip were doing vacationers a favor.

Well then you can personally thank the families of the people who died in the accident for "doing vacationers a favor"

Next months cruise will be my third Disney cruise and I couldn't disagree with you more....I will be booking two more over the next 12 months as well
Re: Accident closes highway to Port Canaveral
Gotta ask why you think Disney cruises are that bad?
Re: Accident closes highway to Port Canaveral
Let's not get into an issue on this thread!!
We need to focus on the people that lost loved ones!!

You could also go directly from 528E to 520E, which is a little more direct. 520E will take you all the way to the beach, where you turn L onto A1AN, which takes you right into the port.

I'm totally with you. I don't think the truck driver's family is sobbing that a few families vacation plans were delayed for a bit?
Re: Accident closes highway to Port Canaveral
Wow, that's horrible. I was just down there and came upon a bad accident on 528. An SUV flipped right in front of me. No one hurt though. In 2007 I saw a horrible accident on 528, multiple fatalities. That must be dangerous road.
