I don't spend 6 months actually planning, but I generally know 6 months in advance whether or not I'm going. I don't do any real planning until about 3 months prior, and since I go all by myself most times, the planning is pretty minimal.
There are times that I plan about a year out, but that's becoming more and more rare.

Not much planning, outside of securing my DVC room. But once the room is set, I don't plan on the car, flight, or anything until it gets much closer. I have old tickets that I use each year, so I don't even need to worry about that. Come to think of it, what the heck, other than a room, really takes THAT much planning?
Currently planning 2011, 2012 and I have my eye on 2013 DL trip as well.![]()

I live in Australia, so overall it will take us almost 2 years of planning and saving for our first trip to WDW!
So very, very excited!
I guess the question for me is how long do I need to plan and how long do I like to plan the trip. I only need a couple of days to lay down a base plan, but can spend months tinkering with it, deciding over which options to select, etc. I'm not a Type A personality but I love breaking down and (over)analyzing the various options.
I already have my next trip planned out and I have no idea when we will get to go again haha. We just found out my wife is pregnant so I'm sure we won't be going in the next 2 years, but for polls sake that's what I answered.
I am looking forward to April when I can put the deposit down for our next trip. This will be in October/November 2013 for the usual 3 weeks!!

I like booking at least 8 months in advance. Then I have time to work out my dining so I can do my reservations right at the 180 day mark.
I am always thinking about my next trip. I already have 2 booked and know for sure we will be doing another one in 2013.
We usually book about 3 months before, but we've officially entered the planning stages for our Christmas 2012 trip.
Roll on March 2012 when I will then be able to book for October 2013!!

we have been going in the spring and again in the fall. We have booked before we even leave the resort because there is usually a placard on the table with a great deal on it. And later on we have been able to adjust in free dining. I use AAA for all the arrangements and our agent is the best. I would plan out far enough to be able to make dining reservations, especially if you have any special restaurants or character meals on your list. Remember you can book 180 days out for dining.
I fantasize the whole year, but actual planning is about 3months.
I'm planning a land and sea vacation to celebrate my 30th birthday in March of 2015, and I've already started planning! Well, not really, but I've got a birthday fund started and am paying close attention to possible places I would like to eat as well as plan what park I go to each day.![]()
