I had forgotten how much I enjoyed that ride. The only time I rode it (I think) was on my honeymoon 17 years ago. When did they officially dismantle it?

They never officially dismantled it. They never actually officially closed it.

The ride closed 'temporarily' on September 5th 1994. The lagoon's props and scenery were taken out in late 1995 or so. Disney took it off the operations list in 1996. The subs were scrapped mid 2004. The queue, docks, lagoon and showbuilding were demolished in late 2004.

Although he has nothing directly to do with 20K's closing, I love the story about the school kid beating Eisner at a game of RCT2.

Eisner deserves to get beat. By a kid because of a game, of course.

I may have ridden this in 91 but I don't remember.

I don't actually feel all that bad towards Eisner right now. I just don't really care. He has screwed the company back into the ground in many respects, but he DID rescue it more than a decade ago. Either way, if there's anyone to be bitter over 20K's closing, it's Mike Ovitz.

Mike Ovitz? I'll leave it to someone else to provide the biography. Let's just say he is quite rich....
It was he who gave the official kiss of death to Captain Nemo.

As for the story, I think Eisney had gone on a PR visit to a local school, and someone suggested a head to head on RCT2. I don't know much more, other than the kid won easily, and Mikey actually was putting in lots of effort.

Only rode once back in the late 70's. Glad I did.

BelleGurl: The subs are fortunately no longer rotting, they got scrapped mid-2004.

Jiminy Cricket: You rode it at the best time! The ride wasn't being deprived of money by WDW and breaking down then, and everything generally worked as it was planned.

crashbunny: Thanks, that was the sort of link I was looking for.
