Its funny that over 75% of their readers voted that it really didn't matter. Kinda of dampens the coloumnist viewpoint.
It appears Disney is already taking heat over this movie.

Wow. Probably one of the most ridiculous things I've ever read. That's like finding an interracial couple offensive.
No one seems to care as much as the columnist though. If you read the comments people seem outraged that this was even written.
Who cares? Isn't this 2009? This is making a mountain out of NOTHING!
Agreed.
Maybe with all the talk of the economy, stock market, the time frame of the movie, etc., the columnist is confused and thinks the year is 1929 and not 2009.
Really though...if you look at many Americans, quite a few of us have blended ethnic and/or racial backgrounds. If your family has been in the USA long enough or a few generations, chances are greater you are not 100% anything despite what your family has told you.
This prince and princess appear at this point to be an interracial couple. (Can we say Pocahontas and John Smith boys and girls?). Let's judge these characters after we see the movie based on their characterizations, not their skin color.
Once upon a time, this type of couple was illegal in many places in our country. Kudos to Disney!

My first thought too, Disney has always been on the cutting edge of tolerance of all types of couples and a bit surprised it took them this long.
Just guys best have short hair and cleanly shaved.Funny how somethings evolve and others stay very much the same.

Well for what it's worth I'D watch this film either way all black, interacial or come what may, i'm just amped as can be that we're getting more traditional animation from D. I can understand that not everyone will feel the same as me however.
From the article, "That toothless firefly that sounds like a slave (see video) isn't likely to convert many fans either"
The firefly has a Cajun accent. Not a "slave" accent, whatever that means.
The history of New Orleans is one of racial diversity. The city is the original melting pot. Louisiana Creole people - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The writer obviously has no knowledge or understanding of New Orleans history or culture.
I can understand how this may upset some African Americans but it is difficult to make a judgment about the characters racial makeup without seeing the movie. If Disney made the prince character Creole or European there must be a reason that relates to story. Oprah Winfrey is voicing Eudora, Tiana's mother. I am sure Oprah would not be behind this if it was something that is going to be disrespectful to African Americans.
