Disney Channel going downhill?

My sisters watch Disney Channel pretty much EVERYDAY, and it's nothing how I remembered it back as a kid.

All the shows are pretty much live-action, and are all about breaking up, relationships, kissing etc. Not really something 6 and 7 year olds should be watchin, in my book. I remember they used to play lots of cartoons (house of mouse, recess, doug). What happened?

Does anyone else feel this way?

Re: Disney Channel going downhill?

My observation is that The Disney Channel has now been retooled to target the more lucrative spending demographic known as the tweens. Even my new favorite cartoon Phineas & Ferb is geared toward that age group.

That is why we have been accumulating a large library of those cartoon programming on DVD so that our children (when they come) can watch those instead of what's on TV.

But I remember most if not all of those shows that WDW4Ever listed as being on ABC in the After-School timeslot not on Disney Channel. But, I have to admit I really didn't start watching the Disney Channel until a few years ago

Re: Disney Channel going downhill?

Cartoons are very near and dear to my heart I just graduated high school and I still watch cartoons. They're better than anything that's on TV right now.

I have the first season of Chip & Dale Rescue Rangers on DVD and I would take them to pep band games to watch before the game. We had the room filled with people watching cartoons with the drumline before and after the basketball games.

Yeah, those are just the classic cartoons that I would say kids of the '90s grew up with. Blues Clues isn't even a disney cartoon, but its still amazing... with Steve, not Joe ha ha

I wasn't even a kid in the 90's when those toons were on. I was in my early 20's and I remember me and my best friend who was my roommate at the time, would watch that entire block of cartoons every day after getting off of work (we recorded them on the VCR)

Re: Disney Channel going downhill?

I don't really remember anything before the '90s because I wasn't even born before 1990 lol. I feel so old talking about these and VCRs HAHA

Well granted everything changes with time. You like your favorite shows, where at the same time, people hated those. It's all opinion.

I miss the old Disney Channel. They had the best shows when I was growing up.

Re: Disney Channel going downhill?

I think gearing the shows toward relationships is troubling. Let kids be kids. The Disney Channel has placed profit over airing appropriate programming.

Re: Disney Channel going downhill?

The thing I remember about girls from elementary school is having the crush that you never ever wanted to tell anybody, but you always tell friends that girls are dumb, yet you have alot of friends that are girls... if that makes any sense...

Re: Disney Channel going downhill?

The Disney Channel and it's original formatting was really fantastic! They created fantastic new cartoons, and showed just as many classic cartoons as well. In the evening, they showed fantastic Disney movies - several that had not been shown for many, many years. And let's not forget the Mickey Mouse Club with JC, Brittany, Christina and Justin!

I am so glad my kids grew up in the early 90's with that Disney Channel. They now have an appreciation for the Disney Classics because of it.

This is nothing new. I'm almost 40 and I remember this type of content geared toward tweens (a term not even coined yet at the time). Good Morning Miss Bliss (later to become Saved by the Bell) is a perfect example. Also the entire T-NBC lineup on Saturdays. Yes, it wasn't examples of Disney programming (granted Good Morning Miss Bliss was a Disney product but went to Universal when it was changed to Saved by the Bell).

I don't have a deep knowledge of programming from when I was that age because my parents mainly kept me stuck on PBS and occassionaly let me switch to Nickelodeon to watch You Can't say that on Television and Mr Wizard.

I personally don't have a problem with programming talking about relationships. My problem is when they script these storylines where the point is to have the kids get "one over" the adults and to make them look like fools.
