Nick, I'm not sure. I have a copy that I received as a gift. It's VHS and it's from England. It wasn't easy to get. Disney is so protective of their image, I'm just not sure if you'll ever see it . I hope we do, it's one of my favorites.
A Google search for the terms 'Disney Song of the South controversy' turns up several links to sites that explain why this film is such a problem for Disney.
Yet on several of the Disney Treasures DVDs there is a section called 'From The Vault' where Leonard Maltin introduces 2 or 3 'politically incorrect' cartoons by explaining how the racial and ethic stereotypes presented are typical of the period when the films were produced and do not represent the current views of society. Couldn't something similar be used to introduce 'Song of the South'?
Also consider this, I have several of the Looney Tunes collections and the packaging states that they are 'intended for the adult collector and are not suitable for children'. When I was a kid in the late 1950's and early 1960's these were the same cartoons I watched on TV and nobody said they were unsuitable! Oh, how times have changed!!!
I'm pretty sure I saw it when I was a kid. Though, I can't recall for sure, nor do I remember much about it.
Racism is probably my biggest pet peeve, so I have no problem with this movie not being in circulation.
I don't think it is Racist at all, but I does not paint a flattering picture at all of African Americans in post Civil war times in the south. It was last in theater release in the early I mid- eighties.:musa:
I'm pretty sure they showed it on the Wonderful World of Disney television show in the 70's, which would have been where I saw it.
I don't remember it being in theatrical release at all.
In the Disney encyclopedia it has all the theatrical re-release dates
you can watch the whole thing on youtbe. but I don't expect you to watch it all.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2BtjW7PW2z0
"Whole".
C'mon, little brother. Time to step up your spelling game. You're 12.
People need to watch a movie like this with the same frame of mind as they would watching "Gone with the Wind". It's not politically correct but it's what the world used to be and there is no getting around it or away from it!
I agree with the above post. I watched the whole video some time ago on YouTube and didn't find it offensive at all. It's no worse than other movies set in that time frame.
Disney was set to release it on DVD when the attractions opened, but the NAACP went nuts. I don't think the movie is offensive at all, but 20+ years ago the powers that be at Disney did not want to ruffle any feathers.
