At the DL resorts your are connected to downtown disney, at Disney's Grand Californian, you basically 20 footsteps from California adventure park and have a fantastic view! The rooms have been updated and themed very nicely and you have monorail transportation to and from.

EXTRA MAGIC HOURS.... special seating at Aladdin Musical in DCA and a few others... they seem to slip my mind...

The extra magic hours and getting tickets at the concierge rather than waiting in line are my two faves. If you're on the Monorail line, it's nice to hop on and off for MK or Epcot. On the other hand, if you're on the Monorail line, it's a bit harder to get to the Boardwalk or Downtown Disney, whereas the other resorts (e.g., Swan and Dolphin) you can walk to the boats.
You want to know what the best benefit of all? The people. You are treated better at a WDW resort than any five star I've stayed at. The people are great and you never have to leave the magic.

^Although what you said is true, the question was originally about staying at Disneyland Resort, not WDW. I think the person wanted to know if it was similar to staying at a WDW resort.
