  • XPass - You may never tour Walt Disney World the same way again ...

Have you heard the term XPass being thrown around the Walt Disney World rumor mills? If not, have I got some news for you that will change how you plan future Walt Disney World trips ...

The core of the NextGen concept is something that currently has the working title of XPass, which is the next generation of Fastpass. XPass would work with the backbone of the current Fastpass and PhotoPass systems, but would go far beyond anything offered today as visitors would plot out each day of their Disney vacation weeks or months in advance with XPass. The system would schedule not just the big E Ticket return times for you, but nearly everything about your visit from lunch seating’s and Fantasmic! viewing to meet n’ greets with your kids preferred Characters to the smaller attractions and shows. The attractions that currently offer Fastpass to any park visitor, and plenty of attractions that don’t have Fastpass currently, would be converted over to XPass so that the only way to access a priority boarding slot at the ride would be to book your vacation with Disney and give your vacation plans over to the XPass system in advance.

An XPass card with an RFID tag in it and the visitors own smart phones (or a loaner unit from Disney) and the new QR codes they can scan would be necessary for anyone booking their trip through Disney. With the XPass RFID tag monitoring your every movement around property, every single on-ride photo or video capture device would know which vehicle you are in on rides, and once you walked out the exit it would offer instant picture previews sent to your phone for your purchase consideration through PhotoPass. XPass would seemingly know no bounds when it comes to planning your entire vacation and then shepherding you through day after day of pre-planned reservations and appointments and Character greetings and ride return times.

The entire NextGen and XPass concept is near and dear to Bob Iger’s heart, and the WDW planners hope to be rolling this all out by the middle of this decade. It’s a massive undertaking, and with this management overhaul Tom Staggs wanted the NextGen team to report directly to him instead of going through Al Weiss as it had done since its inception a few years ago.

Not surprisingly, an XPass concept could wreak havoc with many of Disneyland’s Annual Passholders who just drop in for a few hours at a time. DCA already dealt with a stream of enraged AP’s last June when they arrived to see World of Color for the first time and were told they should have been there that morning to get a Fastpass. The AP crowd has figured out how to schedule in a World of Color Fastpass, or purchase a dining package to get one, but it was ugly for those first few weeks last summer. The transition to an XPass type of preferred experience is something best rolled out in WDW, and most people in TDA are more than happy to let the Floridians have at it.

    Thanks for the update!
Not sure if i like the idea of planning everything that much though, kinda takes the fun out of actually being there! Bit too regimented for me i think...

I think I'll pass on the XPASS, I book my ADR'S well in advance but the idea of booking when I want to ride SOARIN 3 months ahead of time is pretty ridiculous to me....

I wonder what will happen to all that fancy planning if your flight gets delayed (or cancelled)?

I honestly can't see this happening any time soon. Even if it does, I won't be getting on board with it... too Big Brother for me.

I can't remember what book it is from (not 1984), but I read something once that said "In the future, people will be in love with Big Brother." I see it happening every day: people voluntarily giving up their privacy in the name of convenience and, supposedly, to make any experience more "tailored" for you (which is just a fancy way of telling you that you are a target market).

Going way WAY too far. I'm really tired of "touring plans" and ADRs messing up people's vacations. See what you want, eat when you feel like it, and don't let anything or anyone rule your trip. Go be on your own schedule, relax and have fun. Vacations are about leaving your watch at home. Not, "We have to be at this spot at this time, otherwise we won't make our lunch at this hour, or else we won't get this seat for this parade, but if we do then we can't see this character because the line is longest between X and Y, and..." Enough to drive you insane.

I agree. My first trip will be next year, and I will have enough trouble planning which restaurants to book for our ADRs, let alone which rides we want to go on and when. I don't know what any of these restaurants are like, and I'm already expected to know where I am wanting to eat 90 days before my trip? As for the rides and attractions, again I have no idea what any of them are like. So I definitely can't plan ahead with those. I just want to walk round the parks, and decide for myself if that ride looks interesting enough for me to go on.

This idea has been tossed around for a while. They are working a new reservation type stuff all the time. As many said just way too much planning and not enough of just enjoying being there and seeing where the magic takes you.

Now if there are one or two things that are must see and you use the system for just those things It may be helpful.

I have no interest in being that regimented while ON VACATION. I have to put up with being a slave to the clock at work...I'm not going to do it during my expensive free time at WDW.

Re: XPass - You may never tour Walt Disney World the same way again ...

From what I understand of the XPass, it would be for WDW resort guests only that book through Disney. Now, there isn't any clarification if you have to purchase a package deal to get the use of XPass. But with Disney, I wouldn't be surprised. That would mean more money for them. If I find out more, I'll let you know.

We are DVC Members and Annual Passholders and always seem to get left out of the good deals (like free dining). Even when we run out of points, we book a WDW room with an AP discounted rate or AAA discounted rate. So, I will assume we are out at usual on all fronts with this new system. Then again, I wouldn't use the service anyways. Planning is half the fun for me.

Now, I am someone that prides myself on knowing how the current Fastpass system works at WDW and how to make the most of a day in the parks. We DON'T go commando and still enjoy our days at WDW. I have experienced the numerous glares from guests when I am briskly walking through a Fastpass line while the stand-by guests get to stare at a strangers backside for an hour. If this new XPass system lets those guests go in front of me, I will be the one doing the glares. Don't penalize me and other faithful guests that don't NEED your service!

I spend money monthly on our DVC Membership. I faithfully renew my Annual Pass every year. I spend my husband's hard-earned cash at Walt Disney World EVERY year. How about some sort of rewards programs for loyal guests Disney? Marriot does it, Southwest Airlines does it, what about Walt Disney World?

If you are on this site . . . you are planning a trip to WDW, just went to WDW or are a WDW fan and like to talk about WDW until you can plan your next trip back to WDW. We are the faithful fans that need some appreciation. How about if they see you have an eight year old daughter that has been going to WDW since she was born and surprise the family with a voucher for a free meal at CRT or how about if you have a son who is visiting for his birthday and give him a voucher for a free Pirates League make-over. Walt Disney World has ALL your information stored in their computers. I think Disney missed the boat on rewarding the loyal guests. What do you think?

I get more free stuff from the casinos in Oklahoma where I DON'T spend thousands of dollars, I get more free stuff from our local restaurants with birthday coupons and deals where I DON'T spend thousands of dollars at (you get the jist ) . . .

You sound like my husband. A vacation is supposed to be a relaxing time away from the chaos of work. On our first few trips to WDW, he would go back to work MORE tired than when he left. Now, I make sure we have plenty of downtime and actually experience our vacations and not just do our vacations. This was a little hard for me at first being the planner of the family. Once we went off my carefully planned itinerary, I was actually having a better time too.

Some people seem to get just as much enjoyment through planning as they do while visiting the parks. I'm not that kind of a person.
ADRs are insane to me. I don't know what I'll feel like eating in 3 days from now...forget about trying to plan a meal months in advance.
