Box 'O' Letters and Numbers

When you sign up or order things from the internet there is always a code of numbers and letters hidden in a box with differnt colors and you have to write it out? does anyone know why that is there? i think it is a waste of time.

That is there to prevent computer programs from registering. These programs can't read those boxes, so they can't continue the registration process.

It only bothers me when you're trying to buy concert tickets on Ticketmaster. Especially when you don't get it right!!
