Re: Shamu Coming to WDW - September 2010

Well, at this point I'm just trying to motivate myself to get up out of the house and go walking. If I could just make myself do that on a regular basis I know it could only do me some good. Maybe I'll get back on here tomorrow and report being inspired to go walking around the neighborhood. I hope, I hope, I hope.

I wonder.... if I stay hydrated, I wonder if it does me more good to walk during the heat of the day than in the evening. Anyone know?

Your two cents make a lot of sense, Steve--good observations worth taking into consideration. Far too many well-meaning but brainwashed "no pain no gain" trainers immediately subject their out of shape clientele to running, which is more dangerous than most of them are aware of.

Other than the therapeutic benefits of sweating more, not particularly. The important thing is that you're simply doing the walking that you've set out to do.

Now, to marry up these two consecutive posts (since I wasn't bright enough to know how to do multiple quotes......), pretty much the only piece of high tech training gear that I've learned to grudgingly accept is a good heart rate monitor. I've become such a believer in them, it's to the point where I won't train anyone who seeks the help unless they make this investment for me first. Depending on your personal level of conditioning, it may not take as much as you might think to get that target window of cardio output you're trying to reach and hold for a certain duration, and at a glance, you'll know if you're pushing too hard or not enough. Some of the better ones (I like the Polar brand, myself) also keep track of your workouts, which can be motivating to look back on later.

I've known people who were thin and in shape that ran and they were ALWAYS havin' problems with injuries. Then came arthritis and all kinds of joint problems down the pike. I can't even imagine runnin' when you're overweight. Most runnin' actually amounts to ploddingly pounding your joints to heck in a slow jog anyway. Stick with the biking and other low impact (unless, of course, you wipeout...! ) exercise. An injury will DEFINITELY put your whole rigimen out of whack, and your joints will thank you with many years of non-scooter Park fun for years to come...!!!
Thank you for bringing this up, Dizisit. SoPoSox, I wish you the best of luck and think it is amazing how motivated you are! However, like Dizisit brought up, running can lead to injuries. I am sure that as long as you take it easy and, most importantly, know when to to stop, you'll be fine. I can tell you firsthand that running can lead to many different injuries that might take a while to heal (I'm a long distance runner that has dealt with somewhat serious knee problems for years now). Just make sure you have a good pair of shoes (I love Asics and New Balance), always stay hydrated and have a great time! You're on your way to a much healthier lifestyle. Good for you!

Two weeks down ten to go!

First, thanks for all the well-wishes and injury concerns. I have always been a fairly active person and (thus far) have remained injury-free. I usually run in a few 5ks and one popular local 10k race each summer and then trudge through a sprint triathlon in the fall. As I try to lose some weight before our Disney trip, I am slowly increasing the exercise (thus far focusing on more cycling) and trying to watch what I eat. I recognize that pushing myself to injury will not get me to my goal so I am taking it cautiously.

This past week, I biked 37 miles and ran 6 miles (two 3 mile runs). Unfortunately, we also went away for the weekend and had to eat out for three days which was much more difficult than the Fourth of July!

I got on the scale this morning and I lost another half a pound not bad given the weekend, but I was hoping for more. This brings my two week total to 2.9 pounds. Still on track!

I have no trips, parties, or holidays on the calendar for the next month and I am motivated to string together a couple of good weeks. The big 10k is in another month, so I will be cutting back on the bike and slowly ramping up the running.

Off to tackle week three! I see carrots in my immediate future and Beaches and Cream in my distant future.

A day late and a dollar short! No weight loss this past week , but I am not discouraged (too much)! Clothes are fitting better and I feel more healthy the weight will (hopefully) follow. Did another 37 miles on the bike, but did not get out for any runs (too hot). Ive got 9 weeks left and am hoping for a string of good weeks here. Well see what next week brings!

YAY!!! You are doing great. As far as weight loss, when I used to go to a gym, they always said "Kuscle weighs more then fat, so do not get discouraged if the weight number doesn't drop as pnlg as the inches number does". They did monthly measures. I am guessing it works the same for men, but you all have an easier time building muscle.

YAY. This is actually making me want to workout again. I miss the nice lean definition. I did start an eating plan, almonds as a snack, 6 small meals a day, NO junk, unsweet tea only and lots of water. Now, to get busy working out. Pilates for me.
