    Re: Where is everybody?

What a lot of people don't know about Facebook is that they frequently change their terms of service but you have to opt out if you don't like the change...you are automatically included when the change is made. Most people are unaware of the changes and they may be putting more personal information out there than they realize. An example I saw on the news told of a feature some cameras have which encode the GPS location where the picture is taken. If your camera has this feature and you post pictures on Facebook with this embedded code people can easily tell exactly where the photo was taken. It happened to the Adam guy from Mythbusters. He posted a picture of his truck and the GPS showed the location where the picture was taken. It turned out to be his house. So, if you use Facebook, be aware that you may be revealing more about yourself than you realize.
    Here's the article: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/08/12/te.../12basics.html

The news story I saw said it happens on Facebook but this NYT article mentions Twitter.

    Re: Where is everybody?

    Creepy stuff.

I consider deleting my account (or as much as FB allows you to of course, as they retain most of it on file) about once a month but never seem to go through with it. Did it once in the summer of 2008... and then started a job that October where it was strictly preferred that you had one...

    Re: Where is everybody?

People in my field have LOST jobs over Facebook so I cancelled my account this September. Initially it was fun chatting with people I haven't seen since the 8o's but it quickly grew tiresome. Especially when annoying relatives want to "friend" you. In my opinion you sacrifice way too much of your privacy. If I was a teenager I'm sure I'd feel differently...but my teens are long over.

    Re: Where is everybody?

Everyone who used to post so much more often is trapped in my basement... considering I don't even HAVE a basement in Florida, that's what makes it all the more puzzling!

I think you all make valid points, and it's something I've been seeing happen not just in the Disney communities.

With SOOOoooo many places to consume media, interact, socialize, and just take up time (remember the days before getting on the computer in the morning and catching up on 79 blogs?)

So while I don't think it's specific to here, I also think that some people like the convenience of "one stop shopping" like Facebook, or even Twitter to engage in conversation, while others prefer this type of "closed" (I call it family) environment. Some people who have never been on a forum are hesitant or even scared to try and start or learn.

I, too, get mad at myself and wish that I could be posting here as much as I like. I promise that I'm going to try my best to get back on here as much as I can. Busy as I am, I truly miss you guys!!

Thanks as always for being part of our extended family here.

Let's band together to destroy Facebook! It would be doing a huge favor to future generations.

    I guess Lou's not on-board.

My son manages a major water park over the summer. One manager and 2 employees lost their jobs over a picture posted on Facebook. Then another employee started a page to have a sick out the next day.

My DS opted to gather his 100+ employees and had a chat. He now had in hand via facebook reasons to terminate all of the employees that joined that page if they no-showed to work the next day. Duh people.

He now de-activates his Facebook for the entire summer. You just never know who will get revenge and show the boss other peoples Facebook posts.

I love this board and try to post here regularly. Lately, a certain ad has started to make my computer freeze up.

I'll get onboard with Facebook eventually, I'm just waiting for the "conceetid ape Needz 2 Get A facebook NOW!!!!" group to reach 25.

I'm doing okay without, though--I manually update my yearbook at least once a week.

I've noticed the same... I also noticed that it seems the only active threads are the games, which get a little old eventually.

    Re: Where is everybody?

Well, what if we look at it from another point of view -

There comes a time when when there just isn't anything to discuss!

The more popular attractions are often talked to death because of their appeal, and the less popular attractions are ignored because no one really cares. The forthcoming attractions can't be discussed in any real detail because so much can change, and so much is only rumour. Take the Fantasyland expansion for example. The dead attractions also run out of steam once memories are run-dry, for by their very nature there is nothing new to discuss, short of their destruction.

Thus you end up with more or less constant forum games, which I must admit I am not a fan of, nor have I ever been. Once you factor in the real world, you are left with a situation where there are only ever bursts: someone's trip report for example, or a new announcement, or the countdown to a new attraction's opening.

What would you prefer? Inane babble just to keep the forum "active"? Or some real discussion every now and again?

Just another point of view into the mix.

    Re: Where is everybody?

I enjoy this site for learning about disney updates and getting in a disney mood, but because it is a public forum I prefer not to post personal details here anymore (ie random thoughts, trip reports etc). I like fb, not for their games (never played), or random thought esque status updates but for the feature which allows you to private message to a group....kinda like a thread here but you have control over who participates (which in a world of crazies seems like good internet safety to me). Sure, a lot of kids like fb, and sure you have to be careful whenever you're online but all in all I've found fb as a great tool for keeping in close touch with close friends. As a community of grown ups who share a deep and abiding love for mickey mouse we are probablly not best qualified to decide what is and is not "adult behavior". Just sayin! Long live wdw radio, long live facebook!
