I went to the best of the 4 schools. We had on a whole the better, cream of the teaching staff. Staff all held the same degrees, paid the same salaries, but we had the best teachers, the good coaches, etc. My Mom taught in the worst of the 4 schools until my Sis and I graduated and then transferred.

The school board gave us the better football fields, nicer desks, nicer building and so on. Now don't shoot the messenger but here was their logic. My parents house, sitting in the best neighborhood of the four different school districts payed substantially more tax dollars to the district than the other 3 schools especially 2 of the high schools. For the same type, size house my folks payed almost 4x the property tax. They also payed dramatically more for their house because of town and superior schools.

Admittedly I did the same when we went looking for this house and the last one. I picked the best school district in the area. I payed more for my house because our town was coveted. I pay substantially more in school district taxes than our neighboring towns. Our schools are better, they draw better teachers because we pay more than the average and offer better benefits to the staff and we fully reimburse for higher degrees earned.

Our teachers have never in 75 years have walked out on strike. They have a tough union that I'd like to pinch sometimes as negotiations drag on but it always ends the same way, they give, board gives and it comes out somewhere in the middle. Done. Me < even if you don't have children buy a home where there is an outstanding public school system. The homes hold their value better and the residents normally care about their neighborhoods. Always buy that home in the better end of town. Never buy the best house on the block.

Question: Are your school board members elected or appointed? Are they volunteers or paid?
The school board is elected, but the Superintendent is hired. He gets paid an outrageous salary plus benefits and we have heard this one was hired specifically to consolidate our middle magnets into just neighborhood schools
so that the test scores will look better. Currently, the 2 middle magnets are doing really, really well with one being a top 5 in the state. He wants to take those away, and redistribute the students into "neighborhood" schools so that the test scores look better, because the 2 non-magnet middles, are not doing so well.

The problem is assigning by neighborhood means kids will be separated by income and ethnicity, wheras currently the schools are all very well blended. The other side of that is IF they take away the magnet schools, a lot of parents will send their kids to the private schools in the area. We have several high academic private choices. So, that will further harm the public schools.

The reason we need all the information we can get is to fight the magnet school consolidation. He refused to even discuss it at the Monday night board meeting, and it is supposed to be decided on by Dec. But, he never ever wants to talk about it, and tries to keep that issue from being addressed. He has some support in the city council but NOT from the parents of the school kids.

Not sure really how we can fight an agenda, in this city, when the well placed few are more in favor of it for whatever stupid agenda reason. That would be a political reason, not a practical reason and I do not care for the political agenda they are trying to serve.

Making schools very segregated, and very limited to specific areas is not a good plan. Taking out a top 5 school to make a bottom tier school "look" better is also a junked up idea.

Wow. I collect nothing. DD has some pins from 2008 and 2010, but after a bad trade, she refuses to collect pins. She likes the little round buttons and has several of those. And she likes the small figure playsets, but only certain ones. Guess we are not collectors.

For our holidays, to help towards spending money we have a jar we put our lose change (shrapnel) in. With just under a year to go, I counted it the other day and it came in at 572.33p
    That's approximately $890 already!

    Afternoon/morning!

We have a few 'select' pins - ones we bought because we thought they were cool but we'd never trade them either!

She probably has 30 or 40, but she never takes her pins to the parks, and if she buys a pin, it stays in a bag til we get home. One bad experience with an evil teen and she doesn't ever want anyone to even see her pins.
