I am glad that the young man can do the school work but is this person ready for the real world? Are they ready for the changes that are ahead if they go off to college? Do they have the maturity to handle a full time job?

I also have the same issues with students who take a lot of dual credit. For example, a student here can take almost a full year of college in high school (in some cases can earn an associates degree with their high school degree) but that does not mean that they are prepared for college or a work setting. In the case of teachers, they have the opportunity to graduate at age 20. Do you want a 20 year old teaching a bunch of 17 year olds? I have only seen one student in my years of higher ed where they are mature enough to handle thinking like a teacher instead of a student at that age.

Just because someone wants someone to be ready and prepared doesn't mean they are READY to handle things. I think about wanting kindergarteners to be able to read. Some are ready and many are not. Can't force them- but can do your best to make them have the skills they will need. But if they aren't ready- they just aren't ready.

    Jumping off my soapbox now.
I think it is because we are getting old. Soon it will be a whole new generation taking charge.

My DD graduated HS with almost a years worth of AP credit. I look at it the other way around, they are more mature than most of their peers. You should come over and visit her University, I was in awe. The students there from China are leaps and bounds academically than our students here and are very focused. In a heart beat they will be able to walk into an engineering career and it is threatening to the the middle aged now especially since there is little loyalty with employers anymore.

It is more the demographic of the educational institution. The first college my son was in that he transferred the heck out of seemed to have students like you describe that lack maturity. They will take about any ACT score, private college, high turn over prior to graduation. You don't see that at higher learning institutions. Once students need a 30 or 32 on an ACT to be accepted into the University you're dealing with a different demographic. They are just focused and more mature from the get go. I agree that there are some colleges that seem to attract the type of students that can't even follow directions, but those students have to go somewhere and eventually most of them eventually grow up and get it together.

I love kittens and puppies. I don't even look at them anymore 'cause I want to take them all home with me.

Finally went out to eat to celebrate son's 17th birthday. A week late but with his social calendar, that was pretty good!

I've wondered recently about parenthood. We will spend 18 years taking care of them and then it could be after that you only see them once in a while or once a year.

I don't like some of those thoughts.

My kids and I are very close. I did very well sending DS off to college, what amazed me was I did pretty well with my DD as we have been joined at the hip. She did well and I did too, kinda surprised me. I did fine when he went to do his CP at 20 though I went down with him, when he returned to Florida I was happy for him. Tech really has changed things from when I was their age, you really never stop hearing from them. You can send a text and it maybe a while for a response but they come. It really is OK. Now in the years to come when my DD leaves the nest for good, we shall see, I might have to get a second dog.

Still trying to piece together what happened at DL, all clear has been given for guests to return to area. Hearing dry ice explosion????, similar to other explosions in Anaheim. Better info tomorrow. Scary. Sometimes I hate people.

Statement from Disneyland reports "no injuries and no reported damage" from "small bang" in Toontown
