How it is supposed to be is 120 cardinals vote. They are locked into the Sistine Chapel. They have to have a 67% majority, the cardinals whittle it down with 4 votes per day by secret ballot. if nobody reaches a 67% after for days the candidate with the majority votes wills the Vatican. If it takes more than one day they haul them over to St. Martha's but they are sequestered and can't talk to each other or the outside world. Each vote the ballots are burned. A no vote water puts out the fire out. If the ballots result in a Pope being elected the ballots are burned but allowed to continue to be burned and white smoke comes out of the Sistine Chapel. Actually a pretty cool tradition. Tons of faithful stand outside waiting for the smoke, it officially ends the mourning of the passed Pope and the birth of a New Pope. So this resignation kinda messes with tradition which we Catholics are big on.
Now when a Pope dies they have 7 days of mourning and then within 15 to no more than 20 days the college of Cardinals meet to elect the new Pope.
There isn't a death so I am guessing they are going to gather pretty quickly after his last day.
