Rich, I just wanted to tell you that I watched Paula Deen in Europe last night and I knew some of the words the brits were saying thanks to your dictionary!!!

Bandages are wound around the wound.

Farms are used to produce produce.

Landfills were so full that they had to refuse more refuse.

Since there is no time like the present, he thought it was time to present the present.

When shot at, the dove dove into the bushes.

I did not object to the object.

The insurance was invalid for an invalid.

There was a row among the oarsmen about how to row.

They were too close to the door to close it.

The buck does funny things when does are present.

The wind was too strong to wind in the sail.

How can I intimate this to my most intimate friend.

(I never have quite understood it - and that poem... hmmmmm:scratchin )

For 40 days it will remain;

Cheers for that Rich - great for using in class. English is an insane language! You should try teaching it to 9 year olds!
BTW, this thread was very useful to me too.....us southerners don't understand half those northern type sayings either! lol

It just means that if it rains on St Swithin's day it will be rainy for the next 40 days, but if it doesn't then it wont rain at all.
As I can't remember it ever not raining for 40 days straight in England I don't think it works!!:sun:

^^ I am lacking in the historical origins of such things - sometimes I feel as daft as a box o' lights!

And I agree 40 days is a long stretch of sunny skies, England or elsewhere.
