Who would you choose?

Hey everyone!

So in my Intro to Education class, we were working on discussing and persuasion. We did the following activity (first by ourselves, then in a smaller group, then in a larger group) and I was wondering if the DWT family could get the same results as my class did.

Here are the instructions/background:

Ten people listed below have been selected as passengers on a space ship for a flight to another planet, because tomorrow the planet Earth is doomed for destruction. Due to changes in space limitations, it has now been determined that only seven people may go. Any seven qualify.

Your task is to select the seven passengers who will survive on the other planet and build a civilization. There are three persons now on the list of passengers who will not go. Rank them 1-3 by the person you feel should be removed first, second, and third. If you feel the need, (or to persuade others to join your thinking), you may justify your reasoning. The three you pick will be left behind.

1) An accountant
2) The accountant's pregnant wife
3) A liberal arts coed
4) A professional baskeball player
5) An intelligent female movie star
6) A black medical student
7) A famous novelist
8) A biochemist
9) A 70-year-old clergyman
10) An armed policeman

(Note: I wrote everything just as it appeared on the worksheet. Some of the passengers' genders/races are unknown)

So what would you do? Who would you choose? Why??

ok,
I would at least make sure i picked the
inlelegent female movie star ( i believe that they are no existant)
and the accountant, but i have no idea why.....

1. 70 year old clergyman
2. accountant
3. policeman

1) A professional basketball player because we can learn sports on our own and they are waaaay to over paide.

2) I think the liberal arts coed.. Don't really need a reason in my mind....
3) and lastly, An intelligent female movie star: because a) who needs TV if you can read and plus actors/actresses are born every second.. hehehe they are a dime a dozen to come by.

Who would I pick to leave behind????

The Pro Basketball Player- just because do you really need a sports star on a new planet.

The famous novelist- because I just think we might need some oneelse and a novel will not help you survive

The last to leave behind would be difficult. I might leave the 70 year old Clergyman due to his age not that he is a man of religion. you need younger people to help the human race to survive

I Hope I will never have to make choices like this in real life.

Who needs money on a new planet?
We won't be needing anyone that can play basketball and intimidate women.
Hopefully we will be able to start our own control without the use of weapons.

I would be interested to hear what your class come up with.

PinkTink is this some sort of trick question, like all these people... nevermind... i did something like this before but a few of the people on the list turned out to be bad bad bad... okay here we go.

1) A liberal arts coed - Not sure way...I think maybe the lack of direction in life
2) A 70-year-old clergyman - Strictly based on age, nothing else
3) An armed policeman - Last thing we need is guns brought into a new society

I think that only 2 people are sure to make the trip and that's about all I could definitely select given the limited information.

I wouldn't want to bring the armed policeman per se, however, he's definitely a man (policeman). The same thing goes for the 70 year old clergyman. Even though he's old, I'm assuming he's healthy for his age.

Although the accountant is an "assumed man", because it lists a pregnant wife, there are states where that could also be a woman and her legal wife.

Every other person on the list could be a woman, and that would be problematic for populating a new world.

I know that's probably the most out-of-left-field answer to this test, but I tend to hover somewhere between

most of the time.

I'm sure this will seem like a really off the wall answer, but please resist the temptation to...

Leaving behind -
A 70-year-old clergyman - due to age
A professional baskeball player - would grow restless without a purpose and large salary to sustain existence
An armed policeman - hopes of starting a society that wouldn't need law enforcement

Taking -
An accountant - we know he's capable of producing off-spring
The accountant's pregnant wife - for the new generation
A black medical student - help with next generation and keeping society alive
A biochemist - assist doctor
A famous novelist - document history
A liberal arts coed and An intelligent female movie star luck out because the three to be left behind have less usefulness
