It is such a shame to hear that he had died - I heard it on the news this morning.
He was such a great guy and I love watching his programs.

My niece called me this morning to tell me this bad news.
While some of the things he did were very corny, this was a great guy, a friend to the animal world and lots of us would never know some of the things we do about animals without him.
He was filming a documentary about dangerous animals of the sea and was stung by a stingray - while not usually fatal, this one stung him through the heart.
He leaves behind his wife and 2 children.
It is all very sad, and all I have to say is CRIKEY!!!

Its sad to see him go. He was so cool
And the thing that is most confusing is that he messes with way more dangerous animals and doesn't get hurt yet a Stingray who is never dangerous unless provoked kills him. What the heck!

It is kind of sad that he died. Its almost hard to believe because he always seemed larger than life.
Everyone has been talking about this today at work. Seems so ironic that he spent all that time with really dangerous animals and then was killed by a relatively placid one. We were swimming with rays (lots of them) at Discovery Cove last week, and were told that it was safe. I did some research today and it appears that what killed Steve was the barb on the stingray pierced his heart. An expert said it was like being stabbed and only 2 other people in Australia's history have been killed this way. The rays only use the barb when they feel threatened, and normally it is perfectly safe to swim with them. If it did sting you, on the leg for example, then you could be fine with treatment. He was really, really unlucky.
He did so much for raising awareness about animals, and he will be missed.
Our thoughts go out to his family at this time of their loss. RIP Steve, you will be missed.
My son is devastated! Said he is never going to the Great Barrier Reef now.![]()
