    1946:
    Disney's film Song of the South is released. The film is based on the Uncle Remus stories of Joel Chandler Harris, this film features James Baskett and Bobby Driscoll.

    1951:
    Disney releases the Donald Duck short Out of Scale.

    1963:
    The Dapper Dans sing with Julie Andrews and Wally Boag at a special Disneyland press-only event on the Golden Horseshoe stage to promote next year's release of Mary Poppins
    .
    1966:
    Walt Disney checks into St. Joseph Hospital, complaining of shortness of breath, and pain in his left leg and neck. X-rays detect a walnut-sized cancerous spot on his left lung. Although immediate surgery is advised, Disney leaves the hospital to attend to studio business for a few days.

    1992:
    At Disneyland, the Mission to Mars attraction in Tomorrowland closes.

    2001:
    Disney's animated feature Monsters, Inc. featuring the vocal talents of John Goodman and Billy Crystal opens.

    2002:
    As part of its grand opening weekend, the new Borders in Spokane, Washington, hosts Disney Day.

    2004:
    Disney releases Around the World in 80 Days and Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, a special 3-disc gift set.

    The Laugh-O-Gram silent cartoon Puss in Boots, directed and co-animated by Walt Disney, is released.

    1934:
    Disney's Silly Symphony The Goddess of Spring is released. This short is an early attempt at human animation.

    1961:
    The Twilight Zone episode It's a Good Life first airs on TV. Rod Serling's introduction to Disney World's Tower of Terror attraction was taken in part from this episode.

    1965:
    Walt Disney appears on television's The Jack Benny Show.

    2001:
    Disney's LuminAria (a new nighttime show at Disney's California Adventure featuring fireworks) has a rehearsal after park operating hours.

    Disney's Donald Duck cartoon Donald's Golf Game is released.

    1940:
    Daisy Duck makes her first appearance in print in the "Donald Duck" Sunday strip.

    2001:
    The staff of Disney Magazine don their Mary Poppins outfits for the East Coast premiere of the film's sing-along at the Northampton Film Festival.

    2003:
    Disney's Finding Nemo is released to DVD in a 2-disc Collector's Edition and to VHS.

    1931:
    The Mickey Mouse short The Beach Party is released.

    1937:
    Disney's Silly Symphony cartoon The Old Mill is released. This is the first film to use the Multiplane camera, a device invented by Ub Iwerks. The camera gives depth to animation by using layers of backgrounds painted on glass.

    1990:
    The Yacht Club & Beach Club Resorts both open in the Epcot resort area of Disney World. Located just west of Epcot, they are set around a 25-acre lake. The Clubs both resemble New England seaboard hotels of the late 1800's.

    2004:
    The Disney/Pixar film The Incredibles opens in theaters nationwide.

    November 6

    1946:
    Walt Disney writes his annual birthday letter to his younger sister Ruth (who will turn 43 on December 6). The letter and its enclosed check is being sent earlier than usual because he is leaving this day for the premiere of Song of the South in Atlanta. Walt explains how after the premiere he'll be flying up to New York to board the Queen Elizabeth for a trip to England and Ireland. He'll be gathering background material in Ireland for a new picture about leprechauns.

    2001:
    Disney President and Chief Operating Officer Robert A. Iger announces that The Walt Disney Company has acquired The Baby Einstein Company, the award-winning creator of highly innovative media products, toys and books for babies and toddlers.

    1962:
    Disney's action adventure film The Legend of Lobo is released. Rex Allen, accompanied by the Sons Of The Pioneers, tells a tale about a crafty wolf named Lobo who tries to free his mate from a group of hunters.

    1966:
    Walt Disney is admitted to St. Joseph's Hospital in Burbank, California. (Surgery will be performed the following day.)

    November 8

    1966:
    Doctors at St. Joseph hospital in California perform surgery on Walt Disney. On this morning, surgeons find his left lung to be cancerous and remove it. His oversized lymph nodes are an indication that Disney does not have long to live. After two weeks of post-operative care, he will be released from the hospital.

    1973:
    Disney's 21st animated feature film Robin Hood is released. Some 350,000 drawings were made for the production, with over 100,000 painted cels and 800 painted backgrounds.

    1980:
    The Big Thunder Mountain Railroad attraction officially opens in the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World.

    1993:
    The Fountain View Expresso opens at Disney World's Epcot.

    1994:
    Disneyland closes the turnstiles on one of its oldest and most popular attractions, the Skyway.

    1999:
    Exactly five years after the grounding of the Skyway at Disneyland, the Skyway at Florida's Magic Kingdom carries its last guest. (It had been a popular attraction since Walt Disney World opened in 1971.)

    The soundtrack for Disney's Toy Story 2, featuring the music of Randy Newman, is released.

    2002:
    The Los Angeles chapter of the NFFC (The National Fantasy Fan Club for Disneyana Enthusiasts) host their annual foot rally and trivia day at Disney's California Adventure.

    1953:
    Walt Disney's true-life adventure feature The Living Desert is released to theaters. It is because of RKO's refusal to distribute this film that Disney sets up the Buena Vista Distribution Company.

    1959:
    Disney's action-adventure movie Third Man on the Mountain is released. The film, about a young Swiss boy anxious to prove himself by climbing an unconquered peak, was shot on location in the Swiss Alps.

    1990:
    Disney's The Rescuers Down Under is released in the U.S.

    2003:
    The Travel Channel airs Great Hotels - Disney's Grand Californian Hotel, Disneyland Resort for the first time.

    1953:
    Disney's animated Ben and Me about a mouse who lives with Benjamin Franklin is released.

    1956:
    Walt Disney appears as a mystery guest on the TV show What's My Line?.

    1991:
    A new 90,000-square-foot convention center opened adjacent to Disney World's Contemporary Resort. The state-of-the-art center is connected by an enclosed second floor walkway to the original convention space in the main hotel.

    1992:
    The Disney film Aladdin has its world premiere.

    1993:
    Disney announces plans to build an amusement park called "Disney's America" with a history theme somewhere west of Washington, D.C. (The project will eventually be cancelled.)

    1932:
    Disney's Mickey Mouse cartoons The Wayward Canary and The Klondike Kid are released.

    1939:
    Actor Bela Lugosi (best known for his Dracula roles) spends the day at the Disney Studios posing for animators. He will be the model for the demon Chernabog in the "Night on Bald Mountain" segment of Fantasia.

    1946:
    Walt Disney's Song of the South is released and has its debut at the Fox Theater in Atlanta, Georgia. The film, based on the books by Joel Chandler Harris, is Walt's first major plunge into live-action film making.

    1954:
    Disney's Donald Duck animated short The Flying Squirrel is released.

    1957:
    Disney stock is first listed on the New York Stock Exchange.

    1962:
    The Firehouse Five Plus Two (a musical group made up of writers, animators, producers and directors at the Walt Disney Studios) perform on the stage of the Golden Horseshoe Saloon.

    November 13

    1940:
    Disney's 3rd feature film, Fantasia premieres at New York's Broadway Theater. The film introduces stereophonic sound to motion pictures via a special sound system dubbed "Fantasound."

    1991:
    Beauty and the Beast premieres in the U.S. Production of the film took three and a half years and required the talents of almost 600 animators, artists, and technicians.

    1997:
    The Lion King musical play opens at the New Amsterdam Theater in New York City. The cast album is released at the theater and in the tri-state area on the show's opening night too.

    1999:
    Toy Story II premieres at the El Capitan Theater in Hollywood, California.

    2000:
    102 Dalmatians has its world premiere at Radio City Music Hall in New York City.

    2003:
    The Tony-winning musical, The Lion King, celebrates six sold-out years at Broadway's New Amsterdam Theatre.

    1927:
    Disney's sixth Oswald the Lucky Rabbit short The Ocean Hop is released.

    1936:
    Disney's Silly Symphony cartoon Mother Pluto is released.

    1961:
    Walt Disney becomes a grandfather again with the birth of Diane & Ron Miller's fifth child, in Monterey County, California. The baby boy is named Walter Elias Disney Miller.

    1998:
    The Disney/Pixar computer-animated feature film A Bug's Life premieres at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood, California.

    2000:
    The soundtrack for The Emperor's New Groove, featuring the music of John Debney, Sting, and David Hartley
    is released.

    The Disney Club (offering discounts on theme park tickets, merchandise, food and beverage) is launched. It replaces the Magic Kingdom Club.

    1924:
    Disney's Alice Comedy Alice Hunting in Africa is released.

    1925:
    The Alice Comedy Alice Rattled by Rats is released.

    1929:
    Jungle Rhythm (the12th and final Mickey short of 1929) is released.

    1932:
    The Disney Art Class meets for the first time with Don Graham of the Chouinard School of Art lecturing at Disney's old sound studio on Hyperion Ave. In preparation for a feature-length cartoon, Walt Disney has set up this art school to train animators. (Because it is the Depression and jobs are scarce, the studio attracts many talented individuals who, in better economic times, might well have chosen other careers.)

    1965:
    Walt and Roy Disney, accompanied by Governor Haydon Burns, speak to the press at the Cherry Plaza Hotel in Orlando and officially launch the Walt Disney World project in Florida. Only days after this announcement, the price of land surrounding the property that the Disney organization purchased will shoot up to an amazing $80,000 per acre.

    1989:
    The Little Mermaid is released in U.S. theaters. It is the first Disney animated feature in three decades based on a classic fairy tale since Sleeping Beauty

    2002:
    The Wilderness Lodge Villas (part of the Disney Vacation Club) opens adjacent to the Wilderness Lodge in Disney World.

    November 16

    1990:
    The Rescuers Down Under premieres along with the 25-minute animated featurette The Prince and the Pauper. The Rescuers Down Under, the first Disney animated sequel is the first traditionally animated film to be painted digitally on computer instead of acetate cels and paints. The Prince and the Pauper features Mickey Mouse, Goofy, Donald Duck and other Disney characters in a variation of Mark Twain's classic story.

    2003:
    Toon Disney and the Disney Channel celebrate Mickey & Minnie's upcoming 75th birthday with a House of Mouse marathon.

    The Burbank Historical Society officially dedicates a new, permanent exhibit devoted to the Walt Disney Studios, the company's 80th anniversary.
